NRE's Christmas and New Year 2019/20 Travel Summary is now available, albeit incomplete.

London Overground's entry for 26 December says this...
A partial service will operate on Boxing Day as follows:

4 trains per hour will operate between Hackney Wick and Clapham Junction

4 Trains per hour will operate between Highbury and Islington and West Croydon

LO running a Boxing Day service will be popular, and has been long sought after!

For whatever reason, presumably engineering works, the North London Line service will only run as far as Hackney Wick rather than getting to Stratford and its major traffic generator, the Westfield shopping centre. It is however less than a mile's walk through the Olympic Park between Hackney Wick and said retail Valhalla.

Also, the entry for TfL Rail has this potentially promising statement for Boxing Day...
Please check back nearer to Christmas for travel information.

It was announced on the TfL website on 2nd October, no service at Stratford due to engineering works, and no mention of TfL Rail.

Overground to run Boxing Day services for the first time
02 October 2019
Services to operate from Highbury & Islington to West Croydon and Clapham Junction to Hackney Wick
"Whether you are off to visit family and friends or to bag yourself a bargain from the sales, off peak fares will apply all day giving best value for money so you can make the most of the holidays with our help "
Rory O'Neill
General Manager for London Overground, TfL
  • London Overground trains to run 364 days a year
Customer journeys during the holiday period are set to become even easier as Transport for London (TfL) has announced London Overground is to run Boxing Day services on parts of its network for the first time.

This year, on Thursday 26 December, services will operate from Highbury & Islington to West Croydon and Clapham Junction to Hackney Wick, complementing existing London Underground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), tram and bus services.

Rory O'Neill, TfL's General Manager for London Overground, said:

'The introduction of Boxing Day services on the London Overground is great news for our customers. Whether you are off to visit family and friends or to bag yourself a bargain from the sales, off peak fares will apply all day giving best value for money so you can make the most of the holidays with our help.'

Due to the need for Network Rail to undertake essential maintenance work, much of which is done during quieter periods such as the festive period, London Overground services on Boxing Day may vary slightly each year.

TfL will now operate services 364 days a year, excluding Christmas Day, on London Overground, London Underground, London Trams, DLR, London Buses and the Emirates Air Line. Santander Cycles, Dial a Ride and services from Victoria Coach station continue to be available every day.

Since TfL launched London Overground in 2007 it has been a huge success and grown to become the third largest operator in the UK in terms of passenger numbers. The introduction of Boxing Day services continues to build on the increasing demand, which has seen passenger numbers rise from 33 million in 2008/09 to more than 189 million a year today.

Notes to Editors:

  • Services will only operate to Hackney Wick on Boxing Day due to Network Rail engineering work.
  • As Boxing Day is a Bank Holiday off peak fares will operate all day

The headline Overground to run... is a bit misleading as it is only a bit of the Overground, nothing to Richmond, Watford, Barking, Euston etc

However the Northern line is apparently shut south of Euston, on Boxing Day, so will be net fewer trains than on normal bank holiday.

Hackney Wick is a bit random, but surely it's a placeholder until they confirm Stratford? Seems so antagonistic...

Hackney Wick is a reversing point, and, as said above, is close enough to Westfield. Chances are engineering works at Stratford prevent running to there.

Small matter of Spurs playing at home on Boxing Day...
Should be a lot less than 60,000 due to it being Boxing Day but no service to White Hart Lane (presumably there will be Stansted Express services stopping at Northumberland Park) will make getting home interesting with some lovely queues at Tottenham Hale & Seven Sisters for the Victoria Line...

Do you really mean antagonistic?!

As has been said, Hackney Wick is a reversing point - and anyway, if you can't run a service all the way to Stratford, surely running a service to the next station down the line (i.e. Hackney Wick) is a worthwhile second best.

(For what it's worth, Hackney Wick is a somewhat different place to what it was say 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago.)

Boxing Day fixtures provide an annual transport dilemma for footie fans! Regardless, I'd expect a pretty full house.

No TfL Rail service between Liverpool Street and Shenfield on 25th 26th 28th and 29th December.

Also the London to Norwich (and vice versa) services will NOT be stopping at Colchester 28th to 30th December

How might running trains to Hackney Wick station antagonise people? Why might London Overground want to do that? Perhaps you could explain?

I was thinking from a passenger point of view - it's tantalizingly close to the main interchange/destination. Would be frustrating. It's not a short or simple walk, unless heeading to the Olympic Park or Westfield, fine - but presumably the tube lines and DLR routes are on even if NR is off.

Rather than thinking from the railway's point of view (how many operating hours defenders approach the issue) - or assuming any malicious intent.

And yes I'm very aware of a few cool brewery bars and riverside spots, and Hackney Wick being a fun part of town these days. But in the grand scheme of things, it's a bit of a wind-up. Antagonizing to the passenger, that's all. That said, any Boxing Day service is welcome.

But there will be other trains instead.
Indeed there will, over the Christmas to New Year period, all London services are via Platform 1 and the Goods Line at Colchester, terminating trains will be in 4 and 5.
All trains terminating at Ingatestone for some of the week, (28/29) Intrer City will be fast Manningtree to Witham.
27th they are through to London, Norwich trains fast Manningtree to Chelmsford via Goods Line.

Oh how exciting mate. I've not been round the Goods Line for many a year. Wonder if they will offer us IC boys/girls some overtime to refresh.
