Europhoenix acquire Class 91s for use overseas

Highly unlikely Europhoenix will do anything to them at all, unless they absolutely have to in order to get a sale that is, any work on them is intended to be done once they have been exported

I thought that was the plan anyway?

I was just illustrating what they can haul as is, regearing them once exported would improve the haulage capacity

I obviously misinterpreted your comment about Europhoenix adding ballast weights

My comment about ballast weights was meant to surmise that they could add them when they are overseas at the same time as the gearing mods, to give greater adhesion.

WNXX update this evening says that this is a joint venture with Voith for up to 20 Class 91s to be re-geared after export as freight hauling pairs in blunt end to blunt end formation

Voith? hydraulic gearbox on an electric loco??????

Is there any news on these units?

Still at Leicester I believe but it won’t be long before they do get exported because it didn’t take that long for the 87s to be exported did it?

Still as they’re being regeared why not use them to replace 86s???

Just for the record, we ain’t exporting Units to Bulgaria but Locos ;)

The GA Class 90s are replacing Freightliner’s Class 86s, are they not?

Doomotron didn’t specify that they are multiple units!

1. IF the 91s are good enough for Bulgaria then they’re good enough for UK freight.

2. Don’t matter as they’re locos not units.

The 91s are still at Leicester, quite delightfully behind a class 20, giving a nice line of asymmetric locos.

As has been stated many times, the 86s are being replaced by redundant 90s, if you use 91s what are you going to do with the 90s?

It's a simple fact that 90s could be put into service tomorrow as 86 replacements, could you say the same about 91s?

Any truth to the rumours that the 91s aren’t actually going to Bulgaria? Or is it just platform end wibble?

I'm unsure whether there's another thread which has already covered this news, WNXX report that Europhoenix 91117 & 91120 have today been moved from Leicester to Wabtec Doncaster behind 37884 for high voltage tests and modifications ahead of their eventual transfer to mainland Europe

91120 had been planned to move from Barrow Hill to Crewe Heritage Centre today with 37901, however 37901 has made the move on its own.

Thanks @Cowley
Europhoenix has posted some images on Meta-book of 91117 undergoing a repaint and stated the following:
Work continues on 91117’s return to service as seen at UKRL Loughborough. Both cabs have undergone corrosion repairs and repaint. 117 will be fitted with various test equipment ready for a project in a couple of months time.
I assume this has something to do with High Speed testing of ETCS on ECMLS?

I’m not sure why an ETCS installation would be commissioned when the Class 91s have little-to-no future beyond LNER.

Presumably to test the infrastructure, not the train. Similar to ETCS being fitted to 313121 when there was never any chance of 313s running in service with ETCS.

It would be better to fit more HST power cars to do that, rather than coming up with a bespoke design for one loco. The design for HST power cars already exists and the fleet will remain in service.

I disagree. Cheaper but not better. The HST power cars offer the driver virtually no protection in an accident unlike a 91. The ETCS routes (apart from the Cambrian) are all electrified so no need for diesel, and should it be required/desired the 91 allows testing at 140mph, unlike a HST.

The 91 pre-dates the mid-1990s revision in crashworthiness standards, too.

Heard what was probably some wibble about Mexico. Wouldn’t be super surprised though, considering the HSTs and the fact that the president wants to electrify other pre-existing rail lines.

On another note:IMG_1729.jpeg
