455s work Victoria to Horsham which is 90 minutes, and have done for longer than I've been alive, I've personally never had a problem with that :) I don't think that Reading to Waterloo for a journey of that length of time is too bad.
The 455s last ran to Horsham in May 2018 but yes, trains without toilets were common on that line. Before the 455s it was EPBs.

This may be a bit of a dumb question, but the current Google Maps image of Reading station (it's post-rebuilding) clearly shows a 3-car train in SWT livery occupying the southernmost SWT Reading platform. Anyone know what that could be? Have class 158/9s recently worked Reading-Brighton? The image is clearly processed, maybe averaged in some way to get the 3d effect (you can see fragments of images of other trains in the platform) but I can't think of any 3-car stock that fits.

To me it looks like a turbo in GWR livery - I think the white is just a reflection

When I look at it in Google Earth, and select historical imagery, it looks like the image from 6/23/2018 has been merged with one from 7/25/2018 (US dates).

The first image is a 10-car SWR train and the second image is a 3-car GWR turbo. The way that is has been merged makes it look like the SWR colours are on the Turbo!

SWR Class 158s and 159s have booked work to Reading

Nice find! I don't have access to Google Earth right now but I now see that there's no SW orange/red swoosh on the east end of the train, only on the west end. Fits perfectly that it'd be some AI insanity.

Some trains are routed into the main station to keep route knowledge up as well as the bays
I mean, a few words to the right people and a diesel could drop on the Readings, theoretically
But yes, the 1Jxx/1Lxx Readings are either routed into the Westbury Line platforms (1, 2, 3) or into the Relief loops on the mainline station.

To get to the “Southern” platforms would be quite a feat, including demolishing half of Reading station

A few years ago SWT drivers were contracted to operate the leaf fall treatment trains and therefore had to route learn what are normally GW routes, and some of this was done prior to the season starting, using 159s. IIRC a DMU left Waterloo ECS after the morning peak and did a tour including Reading, ending up at Basingstoke a few hours later than normal.

(I’ve tried searching for the discussion to no avail. Does anyone else remember this happening?)
