I'm sure similar questions have been asked before but a search hasn't turned up anything.
Planning a day trip to Didcot from Letchworth the Sunday after next. Best price I can find is Travelcard to West Drayton and then off peak return to Didcot. For that combination of tickets to be valid, does the train have to stop at West Drayton?

See section 14 of the National Rail Conditions of Travel:
14.2 If you are using a Season Ticket, daily Zonal Ticket, or another area based Ticket such as a concessionary pass, ranger or rover in conjunction with another Ticket and the last station at which one Ticket is valid and the first station that the other Ticket is valid are the same, then the train does not need to call at that station for your combination to be valid.

You'll want a Letchworth - London Zones 1-6 Super Off Peak Day Travelcard and a Boundary Zone 6 to Didcot ticket.

Would a West Drayton to Didcot ticket be the same as a Boundary Zone 6 to Didcot one or is there a subtle difference between the two?

The price of the Off Peak Return is different, but otherwise they are the same prices.

Both combinations are valid but the Boundary Zone ticket should ensure a hassle free journey as they specifically exist to be used with travelcards.

You shouldn’t have a problem buying the BZ ticket at Letchworth.

Completely unnecessary for a Travelcard and Boundary Zone ticket combination.
Not if you ask at Reading ticket office. They have very clearly insisted to me that using a ticket to Boundary Zone 6 + in-boundary Travelcard, you must take a train that stops at West Drayton. I gave up arguing with them. This was about 5 years ago; things might have changed. At the time this combination was a couple of pounds cheaper than an out-boundary Travelcard from Reading.

So you just say yes and pay for the tickets. Then board a train that doesn't stop at West Drayton - what can the ticket office staff do? i would be very surprised if such a combination of tickets caused a problem on any train heading to or from London, particularly for the journey the OP wishes to make.

Indeed. I regularly use a Stevenage - London Zones 1-6 Travelcard and a BZ ticket to Reading or Didcot and have never had an issue using non-stop trains that don't stop at West Drayton. There is absolutely no need to get into conversations with ticket office staff about the validity of tickets or your plans. Just tell them what you want, pay, check what they've given you is correct, thank them and get on the train!
