Seems quite wasteful really to re-livery a unit for one trip and then cart it off to the scrapyard. A real shame they didn’t do this last year (adapted as required for modern regs) when the unit was in frontline service.

When you look at the state some of them were in. 047 and 048 in particular with minimum attempts to keep paintwork tidy from graffiti attacks it is an insult to passengers tbh. Let’s paint a unit for a one of trip but not bother in front line services.

I guess it was deliberate the more run done the 313s the more grateful we should appear for any replacement.

313047 was dispatched for scrap with 313051 on September 30th.
The others are still extant...somewhere.

Just a correction, 047 was not dispatched for scrap but sent to Ferme Park, where earlier this week it was supposed to move with 033 & 060 to Hertford North CS, the units made the move before returning to Hornsey, where they remain in situ.

037 & 051 went for scrap on the 30/09/19.

033/039/047/060/061/064 & 134 all remain with Hornsey.

And 048/49?

Maybe the DMS of 064 will be saved?

...or it was just pointless to repeatedly pay money to repair vandalism again and again....?

The exterior looked like it did because they kept removing the tags and supposed 'artwork' being put on almost daily. The chemicals stripped away most of the colour and made them look like that.

Of course the obvious response is they should have done something about the units being vandalised as much as they were!

at the risk of a slight going off topic, the amount of trains being graffitied is reminiscent of the 1980s!

I believe a lot of the problems were on trains stabled at Hertford which has a really easy means of access from the road. I am not sure what has been done since to reduce the problem, as 717s aren't getting hit in the same way (perhaps the offenders were caught or have moved on to somewhere else?).

I recall reading on here at the time that Hornsey was short of the chemicals to remove the paint, and without lots of spare units to run the service*, I am sure people would have been equally upset to have trains cancelled to be cleaned than running.

* With so many 313s on reduced power or having been 'boxed in' due to cab issues, I doubt it was easy to split and swap units. To do so would almost certainly have caused more cancelled services than we already had.

The graffiti issue is widespread I’ve noticed. There have been several 700s & 377s attacked with graffiti all over them. Not just Hertford & Welwyn which suffer but obviously that’s where the 313s were getting done.

Regarding the general run down nature of the 313s, it does seem that the leasco wasn’t too concerned what state they were in when returned as they were never going to be used again.

I gather there’s a group trying to save a Class 315 unit, I’d have thought a dual voltage 313 is better?

I hope they do one carriage of 313134 in blue and grey, giving a heritage livery at each end of the railtour train.
