Seems to have been 221141 involved on 1E32 0945 Reading to Newcastle.

"Virgin Cross Country"...

Hopefully no structural damage..given the location, I expect that the fire was dealt with quickly.

Aye, a long while since XC had out to do with Virgin!!

Did XC not have an interior explosion on a 220/221 running empty sock recently?

It still amazes me that 12 years after Virgin lost CrossCountry.. passengers and media still refer to it as Virgin CrossCountry!

Correct, yes. No-one was onboard and the driver only discovered it whilst changing ends at Birmingham New Street.

I've emailed the reporter pointing out politely that it's been Arriva, not Virgin running the XC franchise for the last 12 years.

I’m not sure anyone outside this forum and Arriva/DB themselves actually knows that it’s not run by Virgin any more. I’ve even had a couple of TOC employees ask me why it’s not listed under “Virgin” on their phone systems any more...

the power of the Branson

That, and CrossCountry not doing an awful lot to discourage people from thinking it’s Virgin (the brand identity isn’t terribly strong, train liveries and interiors could conceivably be a darker-coloured version of something Virgin came up with, etc.).

If they painted their trains green or pink or orange, or had a great big name like “First” or “Abellio” plastered everywhere (others also available), I very much doubt this would have continued.

I wonder is people will still think Virgin are operating the WCML in 12 years time?

The Voyagers still have the same paint as in Virgin days, even the roofs are Virgin red under the dirt. The interiors are almost exactly how they were in Virgin days. It’s only really the dark red ends and pink doors that are different. Even the insides of the doors have the Virgin stripes

Part of me wonders if it was intentional to use a similar colour scheme for the franchise i.e. red and brown to minimise the need for any rehupolstering/repainting. Arriva are known for their erm..thriftiness.

I take it 221141 is completely out of service now then because it was a driving end?

Oh yeah. Forgot about that. It’s a carriage affected on this one as well.

It's a driving car, there is photos in this very thread that show that.

This place makes BBC News look accurate some times!
