Evening,

I recently accepted a position within northern and have signed my contract and sent it back.

Prior to taking this I applied for numerous roles. Including a conductor role which I passed and am awaiting the medical date.

Part of the contract states full 6 months probation must be worked before you can apply for any internal jobs.

Therefore my question is, if the conductor role comes up before my 6 months. Will I be allowed to transfer as I was an external applicant on application, interview etc.

Thanks

Personally, I'd be wanting to show commitment to the role I've accepted. It will stand you in better stead. If a driver position then comes up 2 weeks later, will you be wanting to mess them about again?

Another opportunity will come, don't panic!

Similar situation happened to myself as I was joining a TOC as a guard with a drivers application live.

My TOC told me because I had accepted the position as a Conductor that meant I couldn't continue in the process to be a driver.

Wait the six months then reapply. Your other current application won't be viable now as you have accepted a different position, and it won't be an external application any more as you will no longer be external.

I know we've spoken privately and all I will say is that the whole thing is a gamble.

When I applying for any railway job I always ensure it's one I would be happy to do and one I would be content to stay in for at least two years minimum if not longer.

Having done 15 years in the police I'm definitely wanting to do a job with a bit of an appetite and there's nothing worse than doing a boring mundane job you don't want to do and ending up resentful because you've missed out on your dream job because you are tied into a contract for X number of months or years. My brother qualified as a professional HGV driver a few years ago but was under contract to remain with the company he did his training with for 3 years because they had paid for his HGV licence and courses which ran into thousands. He said he was happy there for the first couple of years but new management came in and he started to hate the changes being brought in such as shift times and working conditions. He eventually moved on elsewhere as soon as his three years were done and he left with glowing references for three years of hard work.

I'm presently working for a recruitment agency which isn't great but on the flip side I only have to give them a week's notice when I leave. I'm just digging my heals in and applying for jobs I really want to do and not just as a stepping stone for something bigger.

I can't honestly provide the finally answer to this but as the other forum member has stated, because you have accepted the first job with the same company, the conductor's role is likely to be dead in the water because of protocol in place about applying for other roles during your probation period.
