Fratton retains both a Railway Club and a Railway Rifle Club, both venues still in use.

Was a railway rifle club a common thing at one time?

Was there not a club under Euston station at one point?

Was a railway rifle club a common thing at one time?

I have heard tell of them from the old hands and assume they must have been like the .22 target ranges we had in the cadets.

There was one in Brighton for a while, I was shown round the station undercroft many moons ago but can't remember if it was in there or was only mentioned as nearby.

I frequented the BRSA club at Castle Bar Park in the 70's. (Held our NUR Branch meetings there). Believe it is now part of Ealing Trailfinders RFU club. Remember playing small ball skittles in the BRSA clubs in Exeter, Taunton and Swindon in those days.

The BRAZA Club at March is still open - if it's the same thing.

And it's right next to the station

Had a few light ales in there in the past. Is there not one next to Hornchurch tube station still?

I used the one at Gidea Park, which had two football pitches but the developers go their hands it during the 90s...

And still I have no idea where my weekly twelve pence disappears off to. Even payroll don't know (or claim not to) but its tradition to pay it after all these years so not bothered about the loss of such pittance just curious.

Still one in Wrexham, less than 5 min walk from Wrexham Central.

Although the above quote regarding the location is quite correct, former work colleagues tell me that no staff/former staff now frequent this club.

I was a member of the two previous BRSA clubs in the town, the first was on land part occupied by a garage situated immediately above the General station up bay platform. I recall occasions scrambling down the unofficial path from the club onto the platform to catch the last train to Bala.

When that closed the replacement premises were built next to the Fire station. However, most of the railway land including the club and former Central station became part of the Island Green development, the building of which caused both the station and the club to move to their present location. Both of these clubs were well known to locals for the quality of their Wrexham lager.

I think that what is missing from this discussion is the fact that BRSA clubs were a great social institution. An example of which was the annual competitions in all outdoor and indoor sports available to all members, (most clubs had a substantial public membership) Clubs competed against each other, first on a local basis. (Wrexham usually battled against Chester, Birkenhead, Llandudno Jct and Holyhead clubs). The winners went on to regional finals and finally national finals held in the London area. (Staff playing in the finals received an extra day off and free pass)

The club chosen to be the playing venue used to make a great effort to welcome other clubs and many new friendships were made in the railway 'family'. The sports I recall were football, tennis, cricket and bowls, the indoor sports were darts, dominoes, cribbage and whist. This is not a complete list, as if there was sufficient demand others could be introduced.

Theres a shooting range under the main concourse in Waverley, not used for shooting now but was a bike repair/rental place but that shut down as well.

The beechwood bowling club at Haymarket depot is Edinburghs only surviving railway club. Used to be loads at one point. Now called the railway staff association.

Is it true that if they are ever all sold off the remaining members get a cut of the sale?

A friend of mine recently received several thousand pounds from the proceeds of his club being wound up so yes. He'd forgotten he was even a member.

Gateshead has gone. Did a disco in there early 2018 as a fundraiser for a member of VTEC staff who had been severely injured in a fall, the club closed just a week after.

We planned to do the same again a year later although this time around it was to honour a different staff member. Safly tho the VTEC staff member succumbed to complications from her injuries.

Newcastle has a very active social committee and organise staff day trips, pantomime tickets etc, they are looking at reviving the sports events and keep the fundraiser as a yearly event. Not having a dedicated club is proving to be tricky although plenty of other struggling social clubs locally will appreciate the business I suppose.

Colwick BRSA is now next to Carlton Station in Nottingham, KFC wanted the land on the Netherfield Retail Park so they paid for the new building.

Grantham is still going and holds a Beer Festival every year.

Lincoln has one but it’s nowhere near the station on Newark Road.

Spent many a Saturday afternoon drinking and playing pool at Hardengreen Railway Club. Long gone and replaced with housing but at least the railway returned.

I walked past "The Railway Club" in Wind St, Swansea earlier this week.
There is still a Railwaymens Club in Aberystwyth.
I think there are still Clubs in Hereford and Worcester.
Yes the one in Hereford at the old Barton Yard is still there.I think the current building was built in the 60s.

Funny story but when I worked for National Express many years ago, there used to be a coach and lorry park beside vauxhall bridge. Coaches would often be parked there either because a crew were lodging overnight, or servicing before working the night departures 591, 526 or 525. There was a club called the Brunswick Club ajacent to the park and opposite Vauxhall station. One evening before taking the 591 Edinburgh out I popped in for a couple of pints and some games of pool with the lodging crew (I was catering so no drink driving!)
Place was full of railway staff. I remember the phone rang behind the bar and the barman shouted someone to the phone. Chap walks over to the bar, takes the phone and chats for about a minute, passes his pint to the barman and says "pop that in the fridge for me for when I get back, got a shunt to do at Clapham Junction!"

It was an everyday occurrence. Breaks on late turns where taken at the club for a couple of jars. Pubs around London terminal would be busy with crews overnight waiting to take mail and paper trains out. It was just how it was and although i know it wrong now, would be lying if I said I didn't miss it.

Social clubs of any kind with their own building seems to be quite rare now, its not just BRSA many clubs such as Working Mens Clubs, Miners Welfare clubs and Conservative Clubs seem to have disappeared over the past 30 years. The main exception to this is Royal British Legion clubs which still seem to have a large presence.

Kirkby in Ashfield of all places still has one outside the current station.

Yes, quite amazing it still survives considering Kirkby in Ashfield Loco Shed closed to steam in 1966 and I believe completely to diesel in 1970. I remember being taken by my dad to the staff children's Christmas Party every year in the early 1960’s.
