Still one in Wrexham, less than 5 min walk from Wrexham Central.
Although the above quote regarding the location is quite correct, former work colleagues tell me that no staff/former staff now frequent this club.
I was a member of the two previous BRSA clubs in the town, the first was on land part occupied by a garage situated immediately above the General station up bay platform. I recall occasions scrambling down the unofficial path from the club onto the platform to catch the last train to Bala.
When that closed the replacement premises were built next to the Fire station. However, most of the railway land including the club and former Central station became part of the Island Green development, the building of which caused both the station and the club to move to their present location. Both of these clubs were well known to locals for the quality of their Wrexham lager.
I think that what is missing from this discussion is the fact that BRSA clubs were a great social institution. An example of which was the annual competitions in all outdoor and indoor sports available to all members, (most clubs had a substantial public membership) Clubs competed against each other, first on a local basis. (Wrexham usually battled against Chester, Birkenhead, Llandudno Jct and Holyhead clubs). The winners went on to regional finals and finally national finals held in the London area. (Staff playing in the finals received an extra day off and free pass)
The club chosen to be the playing venue used to make a great effort to welcome other clubs and many new friendships were made in the railway 'family'. The sports I recall were football, tennis, cricket and bowls, the indoor sports were darts, dominoes, cribbage and whist. This is not a complete list, as if there was sufficient demand others could be introduced.
