Walsall away for Darlo. Happy with that. As I said on twitter: A proper game against a proper club we have all heard of in a proper ground. This is what we have been fighting for for nearly 10 years.

Walsall are on a bad run of form, near the bottom of league 2 and not a happy ship. We could get something there. it will be very tough but doable.

Some good draws for the plucky non-leaguers.

a several ties that ensure non league presence in round 2. Chichester must be assured of being on TV as they will be the smallest club left in the cup.

The magic of the FA Cup,
Oldham at home for the Heed, Darlo away to Walsall, nice little pre match butchers at Bescot Rich.

Agree there's some good ties in that draw. Good draw for the Whites that Cletus, they're struggling big time. Certainly a winnable game. When the draw was being made, we were all hoping to avoid, anyone ridiculously far away and Dover fitted that criteria. Been to the Crabble 3 times with the Heed, I wasn't overly keen on a 4th at this present time;) How's Riggy doing for you?

Rigg has been pretty much invisible tbh. Been played too wide really,
He did score at Hartlepool though

I already know Bescot quite well ;) Spent far too much time in the Park Inn next to the football ground. I am happy with the tie. It will be hard but we can go there and get something.

I post occasionally about Altrincham, although I'm slightly out of the loop now that I live in Renfrewshire.

Our nemesis ... congratulations on progressing in the FA Cup .. hope you kick the you know what out of York City!!

Sol Campbell announced as new Southend manager. Probably went there to get to go to Dover in the FA Cup.

Preston North End 1 Leeds United 1. Finishing let Leeds down again. It's like we don't want to go up. Good away trip though. A trip to Hillsborough for us on Saturday, which is never easy (for us).

I'm a North End fan and really enjoyed that match last night. A proper good old action packed game. 5600 fans from over the Pennines added to the atmosphere. Gutted that we conceded late on but I give credit and a draw was probably a fair result. I love the Championship. It's the best league.

Worth adding that it was nice to have a friendly welcome from Lancashire Police, who allowed alcohol to be served in the ground, resulting in zero arrests. They said they policed based on previous (good) behaviour, rather than a clubs reputation. Who would have thought that fans behave with more respect if you treat them like humans?

Expecting the total opposite at Hillsborough on Saturday. 12:30 KO and all trams cancelled already.

Early results–too many police on duty, too few talk to fans
• Annual cost of policing professional football totals £48m

The English Football League is to fund research into match-day policing aimed at managing potential flashpoints with a more progressive approach to supporters. The long-term objective of the study is for the police to deploy fewer officers at games.

The project, termed “Enable”, carried out observations at five matches last season and reached three key findings: the risks of violence were generally lower than the police had expected, too many officers were on duty and too few talked to supporters.

It also suggested forces did not respond by reducing officer numbers when information based on “very weak” evidence proved unfounded.

The EFL hopes supporting research and match observations for a further two years will help reduce costs and the number of officers allocated to matches.

Enable, led by academics Prof Clifford Stott and Dr Geoff Pearson, cites an estimated annual cost of £48m to police professional football, of which only £5m is borne by clubs since they are legally responsible only for policing on land they own or control on match days.

Last season’s Enable report concluded that high deployment of officers, including those trained for riot and public order control, was often unnecessary and could actually escalate tensions.

It also proved too costly and took resources away from more pressing areas of policing.

“Despite the good practices we observed, such high levels of resourcing are not sustainable, and consideration must be given to ways of reducing the demand and level of resourcing involved in policing football,” the report said.

Several forces have made changes following work by Enable, including the deployment of police liaison teams tasked with talking to supporter groups and placing less emphasis on police riot squads.

West Yorkshire police, whose recently retired chief superintendent, Owen West, is a senior consultant with Enable, have reduced their deployments at Leeds, Huddersfield and Bradford.

Lancashire police, also part of Enable, reported this week it had cut its resources by 35% from last season for Leeds’ visit to Preston and there had been no incidents of disorder and no arrests at Tuesday’s match.

John Nagle, the EFL’s head of policy, said: “The aim of the project is to promote collaboration between football clubs and police forces to encourage a progressive dialogue about the best, most efficient ways to police football matches and help develop cutting edge crowd management techniques, and so to improve the match-day experience for supporters and help reduce the financial burden on club and policing budgets.”

One of last season’s matchday observations found that a group of away fans police had designated as “high risk” potential troublemakers were in fact less inclined to disorder than the pre-match intelligence. Enable’s report concluded: “In contrast to pre-event police expectations there has been little evidence of any major underlying risk that was brought about by groups travelling to these events who were conspiring to precipitate disorder … It was evident that the intelligence picture is often very weak and bore little relationship to the risk that actually emerged. In addition, we noted very little critical analysis of this intelligence.”

The report argued for “a comprehensive advance” in methods of assessing how supporters are likely to behave, a greater recognition by police that fans have the right to freedom of assembly, association and expression, and for an “increased emphasis” on engaging and communicating with supporters.

The Football Supporters’ Association, which has long campaigned for more progressive policing, is a participant in Enable, contributing its own observations of match-day operations. The FSA chief executive, Kevin Miles, said: “The initiative isn’t without its challenges but we have already seen positive changes in how supporters are policed. It’s already clear supporters respond far better to a community-driven, engaged style of policing as opposed to always being treated as a potential public-order problem.”

Dulwich got a fairly TV-friendly draw. Carlisle and Portsmouth fans got stitched up with long journies for night games though.

Just watched Southampton 0 Leicester 9 on the box. Saints had a man sent off early doors, but still looked absolutely abysmal all over the pitch. A record away win for Leicester who finished well.

Blimey. I listened to the first half in the van on the way home and it sounded like they were in for a good drubbing. I didn’t realise it had finished up that bad for Southampton though.
Not looking too good for the Saints this season.

WTF? I can't believe I missed this match. I religiously listen to every game Radio 5 Live broadcast. What the hell happened? Nine nil away from home. Where were Southampton? Nice one Leicester. You continue to surprise.

(Radio 5 Live did the commentary. Is there anywhere I can listen to it online?)

I don't understand these games. If I'd have popped into my local bookies yesterday and asked for a quid on Leicester 9-0 away at Southampton. I woke up in my local mental health authority. OUCH!

A couple of interesting stories I saw today...

Firstly, it's not often you hear of a player who isn't even playing being booked:

VAR - Michael Eberwein concedes penalty while warming up

...VAR spotted Eberwein had touched the ball before it had crossed the line, prompting referee Timo Gerach to give a penalty and show him a yellow card....

Secondly, I'm sure most people will remember the first time they saw their team play... this 13 year old certainly will!

Southampton 0-9 Leicester: Saints fan, 13, sees dream first game turn to nightmare

Every kid dreams of watching their team play for the first time, but for one young Southampton fan, his dream turned into a nightmare.
Meanwhile York City are still unbeaten this season, having secured a 1-0 victory today against second placed Chester City, so hopefully this will be their final season of regionalised football.

Years ago Dean Windass was booked for Hull City whilst warming up as a substitute, after he deliberately did his warm up wherever Stoke's Rory Delap happened to be trying to take one of his trademark long throws!

Dean Windass was, of course, sent off 3 times in the same game at Aberdeen and took one of the worst penalties I have ever seen for Darlo. He should have been sent off for that!

His son Josh attended Huddersfield Town's academy but never played for the first team. He played for Rangers for a bit, he's now at Wigan Athletic.

I had a false memory that he'd been a 'keeper, turns out I was thinking of Josh Lillis, (son of Mark Lillis) who plays in goal for Rochdale.

EDIT: I knew there was another amusing factoid about Windass senior when he was in Scotland, but couldn't for the life of me remember what it was!

York 2 Boston 1. Not a surprising result given the way York have started. Need to start pulling in some away points for a playoff push.
