Phased introduction for the 331’s today with not all planned units entering service.

1028 Liverpool-Crewe, etc (now booked a 4 car 331) still a 319.

1036 Liverpool-Blackpool also now booked a 4 car 331, a 319 too.

I was on a 331 this evening, 18:12 Leeds to Bradford Forster Square and I'm almost positive it was 6 carriages, a warning at several stations that the train couldn't fit the platform so not all doors would open! (Kirkstall Forge and Apperley Bridge I think were included which seemed a bit odd considering they're fairly new stations!)

Also, Fizzing Hole announcement!

To say it was 6 carriages it was very busy, probably because the 18:06 Leeds to Brighouse was a 2 carriage pacer with people pushed against the doors so probably hoovering up some extra Bradford traffic!

So, the 3 car units are now in service on the east side?

I was on the same one, and heard the announcement for Kirkstall Forge which I found odd as I was sure it was only a 4 car unit. But there was no such announcement at Shipley, which you'd expect on P4 as that would be too short for 6 cars.

I was on a unit from Skipton to Leeds the other day that did this. It was a 4 car and it was being auto announced in error as the guard told us then disabled the announcements.

6 cars are definitely not on the leeds electrics yet.

My favourite magazine Modern Railways this month has some new train reliability stats.
Miles per technical incidents MTIN for Northern are
195/1 91345 miles run MTIN 4152
331/1 19780 miles run MTIN 2198.
For interest top is the SWT Siemens class707 with MTIN of 106378 and 2nd Hitachi 385 with 28224.
Bit to go yet then.

As someone mentioned in the 195 thread, it would be better to compare MTIN values for other recently introduced fleets, rather than ones which have been running for a year (385) or two years (707) and are probably out of the initial stage of the "bathtub" reliability curve.

Took a trip on a 331 from Ilkley to Leeds 2 weeks ago, and I was pretty impressed. There definitely was a nice "New Train smell" as you walk on, and the door opening chime wasn't as atrocious as the 322 sound (It feels like somebody is screaming into my ear with the 322 chime and you quickly develop a headache!) It does seem like a very table based train from an initial glance. One issue I noted was the constant humming sound from above; people have noted it before on the 195 thread as well. I found it to be a bit jolty in places, sometimes it would be as bad as a 80x in my opinion.

There is very little leg room, so I had problems with having my bag next to my legs, ultimately opting to put it under the seat itself. There also isn't very much space for large bags (for say the climbing mat I had with me) but that isn't the end of the world as most Northern units don't have a huge amount of space for large bags other than the 158 and even the 156. The seats weren't that bad for the most part, however I think I would opt to take a 333 seat over the flat cloth, even with the 2 + 3 seating arrangement.

Overall in my opinion, I think that they are good units that I would be happy to travel on again in the future. My only concern is that they don't appear to have too much standing space, with the only noted space being by the door area. Between the choice of a class 333, I think I would just barely pick a 331 due to the nicer interior. I think I would give it an 8/10.

I think the idea with the cantilevered seats is that large bags should fit underneath them (no centre or end support). However, it's not something you'd necessarily realise without actually looking under the seats.

331 introduction on some Chat Moss and Crewe-Man Picc services today.

Mix of 3 and 4 car varieties now in operation out of Liverpool on Wigan/Blackpool/Crewe/Warrington services.

The remaining Blackpool diagram which does the Wigan stoppers in the morning then 1036, 1337, 1636 Blackpool then 1928 Wilmslow ex-Liverpool is now booked a 331/1 (4 car).

331015, 331103 and 331016 were the units, are they testing due to more 331s entering service on monday?
That testing is more likely due to issues with the electrical supply system & 331s, affecting other traction such as the 92s on the Caledonian Sleeper.

Was just going to confirm with eyeball- 331/1 on 11.08 to Blackpool from Wigan, and 11.22 Wigan-Liverpool.

The main idea is easier cleaning.

Just to clarify, I presume 1108 Wigan to Blackpool means 1106, in which case it is the 1036 ex-Liverpool Lime Street. 1122 Wigan - Liverpool is 1121 and is on a diagram which does mainly Wigans - the furthest it strays is Warrington and Wilmslow.
