TfW confirm they will start driver training with their units in "early 2020"

Refurbished trains to boost capacity on the Valley lines have been delayed "until early 2020".

The Porterbrook-built Class 769 trains were due to have been delivered to Transport for Wales (TfW) last spring.

The rolling stock firm said the five trains have been held up by engineering and supply chain issues.

A source close to the company said the project, involving converting older trains to use diesel and electricity, has presented engineering challenges.

A spokesperson for TfW, which took over running Wales' train services a year ago, could not confirm when the trains will be operational, but said, "once we have successfully received the trains, they will undergo stringent safety and engineering checks to ensure they are ready for service".

"We will then commence driver training and we hope to introduce the Class 769s in early 2020".

I've not seen anything reported anywhere on the reasons for the long delays with the 769s. Does anyone have any information?

Porterbrook have never given any official reasons why the project is running over 2 years late, but there have been plenty of rumours

They launched and sold a product before they knew if it would work and before they had the infrastructure to build it. Now Northern, GWR and TFW are taking the flak.

This project really (Flex 769) really needs to be put out of its misery cause we'll never see all in service.....or many in service if ever...

Hopefully that wont be too long coming especially with the amount of mileage accumulation runs that 769450 is doing every night between Crewe and Carnfort and hopefully the exhaust pipes have been fixed on 769002 and 769008.

It will be interesting seeing the 769s around cardiff and 769006 shouldn't be too long being delivered to Canton.

Going past Canton this morning on the way into work, 769008 was lit up inside and had the destination display working on the front of the train. Just a bit too far out to see what it said through. Nice to see signs of life

It is posted on the Northern thread that the unit has finished testing and been accepted so perhaps TFW can progress

They all show as timed as 150s in RTT, I think the poster was asking if they were 769 runs.
Yes I know. So I checked to see what units were allocated to them and they are all 150's.

What would be the purpose of those ECS Cl. 150 runs? Training up newly qualified drivers on 150s?

Training on specific traction is normally done on trains in normal service. It may be the trainees first ever drive on mainline however, that has to be done on an empty train, using whatever unit is absolute.

I don't care what they look like, just get the f**king things in service. Not a big fan of paying over a grand a year to be crammed into a 142 like this morning and every morning this week.

Why not just paint it? TfW plan to keep the 769s until the Stadler Flirts and City Links are in service, so it'll have 3 - 4 years with TfW.
