I know it is possible to upgrade an advance ticket to a flexible single for the same journey, but can an advance be upgraded to a flexible return for the same journey?

Yes, you can, subject to the usual admin charge.

Although, IIRC, you will be stuck with the original TOC(s), so even if you upgrade a TPE advance, for example, to an Anytime Single or Return, there will still be a restriction of TPE only.

According to FGW ticket office at Taunton, an advance can only be changed to a single ticket, they were helpful, but siad their system would only allow a change to a single ticket and not a return. Three members of staff all said the same thing, and the computer system wouldn't give thwem an option to change to a return. This is obviously at odds with the advice given on this forum. Who is correct?

I am sure the guidelines say you can upgrade to any available ticket (subject to the origin and destination remaining the same). It would be difficult to argue that a walk-up return ticket for a journey is not available, so they are wrong - although it is possible their system doesn't allow it, which it really should.

The forum.

GWR use Fujitsu STAR? If so there is definitely one (manual excess), and possibly two (using excess from by selecting the return, changing its price down to the single, then selecting return as excess ticket to generate correct excess, works for walk up never done it for advance) ways of doing it. But both require either a) natural IT skills, or b) training.
