Tip up seats is a bit better than the planned 4 seats with table at least, it still allows the area to be used flexibly. You see people trying to store luggage and buggies in the current cycle storage area, which is not very easy.

personally I find tip up seats provide more confrontation, not less.

I’ve said before that ideally without interference from DfT that SWR would remove 1 row of seats in each coach of a 444 to provide space for large luggage, which would hopefully encourage people not to put bags on seats.

I think the problem they never thought through originally is the nature of the space is that it’s not really part of the main seating area of the coach, being beyond the vestibule doors, and next to the toilet as well. Flip down seats are a much better compromise, but if they are going to do one bike space they might as well do both surely?

Because the government has this polarised idea that cyclists will cycle to the station, leave their bike then pick up another bike at the other end of their train journey. Gone are the days you could pack 20+ bikes in a Mk1.

In a lot of cases this doesn’t happen. it’s a failing of the franchise system that the Desiro refurbishment program had to include this provision on the basis of seat capacity - very London centric.

Thankfully the refurbishment program has so far ignore this change although maybe we are now seeing it in action.

The problem is that there's not been the required increase in cycle parking at stations either, yes there's been some and there's been some large schemes at some stations.

However this also had to be seen alongside the increase in the numbers of passengers and those cycling which means more needs to be provided than had been just to keep up with demand even before you require cyclists not to take their cycles on the train.

By not doing it for both it does at least mean that there's a dedicated cycle area, so that there should (in theory at least) be less arguments about what goes there. In that you don't get one buggy sat in each area therefore blocking any cycles from using the sides (as a parent would more likely head to an area where they can sit than they can't sit, especially if they have other older children who also need to sit).

On 444026, which is a recent refurb, and it has two tip up seats installed in both cycle areas. Can foresee plenty of arguments about those.

Are the 444/450s getting relivered?

444006 and 450036 will be the first two of each class to receive the new and amended livery, i.e. no stripes.

Will all 444's receive these?
[tip-up seats in both bike areas?]
I’d say probably yes, unless it’s just a trial so that SWR can prove why not to do it.
Otherwise it seems to be an alternative way of meeting the exact standard class seating capacity declared for the 444s in the franchise agreement.

If it were an evidence gathering thing I’d have expected a staff briefing to go out asking for reports, I’m not aware of any yet.

Great! The Desiros really do need a repaint at this time, especially the 444s. :)

personally I think the 158 sunflower livery would have been nicer!

Yes, I was really suggesting a possible straw to clutch at, it seems far more likely to be permanent.

With only 159022 to be refurbished at Loughborough, does anyone know if the 159/1's are being done next?
The 159/1s went through the programme (which is essentially a C6+mods) first in SWT’s time.

Could someone give us an update on the refurb?
Now the 444's are nearing completion, I suppose it's full swing on the former HC units.
