The South African mind-games worked then.
Quite possibly. (I'm avoiding making judgement because I'm no referee myself, and know that I was watching through a very partisan lens.) Such issues aside, that was a thorough bruiser of a match, well contested on both sides, and could have gone either way.

Anybody who knows anything about rugby would have had New Zealand as favourites. It will definitely go down in history as a World Cup upset.

I had an England v New Zealand final!

The England v New Zealand game was superb. The South Africa v Wales game less so.

South Africa v Wales was only interesting in the last 10 mins and that was only because of how close it was.

They both played to avoid losing. England and New Zealand both played to win. If South Africa play like that and win the final I am concerned it will take rugby back a few years.

I'm very worried about England messing this up. We may never have such a golden opportunity to win the World Cup again (I'm sure South Africa feel the same way).

Thoroughly looking forward to tomorrow's game. I've never watched a rugby game in my life and I haven't got a clue of the rules. But bloody hell I've listened to most of the commentaries from BBC Radio 5 Live at 09:00am these last few weeks and been enlivened.

I don't have a TV. Is there anywhere online I could watch this game tomorrow?

(I'll be recording the radio commentary on 5 Live on my DAB by the way)

Nowhere legal, if you don’t have a TV licence as you’ve mentioned on the football thread. ITV have the rights in the UK, so the World Rugby stream is blocked from UK IP addresses.

Same referee as Wales v SA, good to see Garces has carried on his form from last week of letting the Boks away with murder and then giving dubious penalties in their favour. He robbed Wales last week, looking similar again tonight.

The ref has been poor but England have played right into South Africa's hands. Sloppy passing and sloppy handling is just what SA want as it usually leads to a penalty and that's clearly what they are wanting.

England have to change their game plan in the 2nd half otherwise we will go down to a raft of 3 pointers being kicked through the posts

Poor from England. SA have the scrum under control. Sloppy. Too many penalties given away. It will be very hard for England in the second half

Another dodgy penalty at the scrum. It's beyond a joke now. Obviously that petition got into Garces' head because he was SA's best player in the semi and is the same tonight.

But yes, England have been sloppy. Very sloppy.

Retired comentator Huw Llywelyn Jones noted (about Friday's match) that if it had taken place at the beginning of the pool stages, with a fully fit squad, only six of Friday's squad would have expected to be in Wales' starting 15.

I'm happy to say it's an improvement on four years ago, when the squad was bruised and battered in fighting its way out of the group stages: this time we got to the semi-finals before the injuries really started to tell.

After a successful twelve years, I find myself wondering if the incoming management will be able to develop this squad with an attacking pattern that isn't quite so dependent on bludgeoning the opposition (and ourselves) into submission. That might be more profitable, given we have a smaller pool of players to select from in the first place.

South Africa's strategy of loading their substitute bench with forwards, to keep their pack fresh throughout the game, seems to have paid dividends for their very direct style of play. On the other hand, Japan have reminded the world that fast and free play can still work in the modern age.

All in all, an enjoyable few weeks of rugby!

Ah yes. Good to see it again. England lost so the referee was poor. Nothing to do with England playing poorly, and South Africa playing well.

I am partly trying to wind people up with this :p
