1) Don’t believe what you read on Facebook.

2) Depending on how you define it - Maesteg could easily be the Western Valley Line.

1) I didn't say I believed it, in fact I queried it.
2) We usually refer to them as a Maesteg - Cheltenham route rather than a Valleys service (Yes I know one goes to Ebbw Vale and not all are through trains)

The Western Valley is historically rail wise the route to Ebbw Vale and the Eastern Valley going up from Llantarnam and Pontypool. They are merely the Gwent Valleys rather than the whole of South Wale.

That makes much more sense however the Ebbw Vale route isn't what I'd call the Western Gwent valley considering north of Cardiff the Rhymney route is in the Gwent valleys. That being said I understand the logic in referring to the Ebbw Vale route as such.

Are we expecting a change in the timings of certain services to use 158/170 timings in place of pathing the services to 14x timings to better utilize the speed available or will they keep the existing timings in place due to the chance of 150s turning up on the route?

Historically, The Western and Eastern Valleys extended north from Newport and these would have been in the old Monmouthshire. The Rhymney Valley was in Glamorgan before boundary changes, Gwent only being formed in 1974. I should think the timings would be kept as a standard one for the route at 75mph.

You are quite correct. The route from Risca to Ebbw Vale was always known as the Western Valley and Risca on to Nine Mile Point and Tredegar etc. Is the Sirhowy Valley.

In recent media/press releases about TfW having to keep Pacers in service into 2020 due to late arrival of the 769s and 230s, Porterbrook have said that:
"we have accelerated delivery of our Class 170 units and are also supplying additional trains to cover for the Class 769s and provide support to TfW and their passengers.”
As 170s are still in service with GA, there doesn't seem to be much acceleration of delieveries going on to TfW.

And must be one of the last to still have GA branding, as well as 202.
From what I know:

170271/273, 170201/202/206/208 - still with GA but debranded - "273" and "206" likely next two to transfer

170270/272, 170207 - with TfW and now TfW branded

170203/204/205 - with GA, still with GA branding or...?

I agree. Does anyone know if 170206 and 170273 are still waiting in that platform at Norwich station ready to transfer...?

It's even more complicated than that! Gwent was indeed formed as an official county in 1974 although Gwent is in fact one of the oldest regional names in Wales. It derives from the Latin Venta Siliriwm (Caerwent).

The Rhymney valley was in Mid Glamorgan though with Rhymney town itself moved from the old Monmouthshire into the new Mid Glam in 1974. We then come too the gloriously obscure "Preserved Counties (Amendment to Boundaries) (Wales) Order 2003" which aligned the preserved counties with current local authority boundaries. Hence the western half of Caerphilly county borough became part of the preserved Gwent. I'll get my anorak.

And that's on top of the fact that the original 1826 Rumney (or "Old Rumney") Railway ran to Pye Corner, on the outskirts of Newport!

Where's this "acceleration" of GA to TfW 170 deliveries at...? I'm almost bored of waiting now

A watched pot never boils, eh?

Maybe TfW are more than happy not to receive most of the units until much closer to the timetable change, if all they are going to do is take up storage space. From what I can gather there’s little needs doing to them, and presumably they don’t need that many for crew training.

The class755 Flirt thread mentions that 3 class 170's are going over to Wales this weekend but I have no idea whether that is accurate.
GA do have about 11 Flirts in service now though.
