This isnt a film premiere. Its a TOC which will most likely be a disaster. First must really be blowing this out if proportion surely

Good to see you’ve already critique them on their service when they haven’t yet started running anything.

Midland Scottish Railway?
Midland Northern and Scottish Railway (MNSR)?

Whatever it is, it'll have "Railway" in the title because the DafT think Jo and Joanna Numpty can't work out a train by default runs on a railway. Given it's First group though perhaps DILIGAFR might be a better fit.

London Midland and Scottish is trademarked by the DfT so you're first suggestion is likely to be the old LMS name. I am tipping LMS as the name seen as it is trademarked by the DfT

Hardly, rather the opposite. Outside enthusiast circles I suspect approximately nobody knows the Virgin name is about to disappear!

Apart from the Virgin groupies who seem to think that Virgin be taking away the 390s and 221s with First replacing them with Pacers as apparently was going to happen last time round...

My money is LMS with a R on the end. The R stands for railway.

What about TFLMS, with the TF being officially "Trains For" but also a subtle hint at the ownership companies (very unlikely I know)

I Tf... since the for would not be capitalised.

The problem with LMS, LMSR and TfLMS is none of them mention North Wales or North West England. The North Wales services are a substantial part of the franchise.

In any case we don't get to pick the name :)

They really aren't. They are a few trains per day as against 9tph into and out of Euston all day, 7 days a week. It's nothing like GWR is to south Wales.

And?
  • London North Eastern Railway doesn't mention Scotland.
  • Transpennine Express doesn't mention Scotland - and they have many services which don't cross the Pennines
  • East Midland Railway doesn't mention East of England (Norwich) or North West England (Liverpool)
  • London Northwest Railway doesn't mention East of England (Bedford) or East Midlands (Northampton)
  • Northern doesn't mention East Midlands (Nottingham, Lincoln)
Realistically, a company name that refers to a geographic area is rarely going to be perfectly aligned with the region(s) it serves.

The three trains per hour to Manchester (and to some degree the hourly Liverpool train) - are a substantial part of the franchise though, without a doubt

I think the domain is a bigger clue - Virgin haven't registered pendolino.co.uk or voyager.co.uk, and LNER haven't registered azuma.co.uk - while some of us thought it might have been for use in the context of "LMS Avanti service" describing an 80x operated train, the domain seems a giveaway that this is very likely to be the TOC's name.

On the subject of brand names being used for websites, Virgin did register virginazuma.com!

I'm surely not the only one who thinks of the Peter Kay advert for John Smiths whenever "Avanti" is suggested as a possible name...

Only in your opinion. Which only counts equal amongst everyone else’s

No you aren't!

Avanti is a cringeworthy name, but no worse than Virgin Trains with their "wacky" adverts and talking toilets...

Excellent, not seen that in years.

So Avanti, it's not then, or maybe it is. Only 25 days to go...

How about QFPNWC * as that doesn't miss anyone out as it doesn't specifically list anywhere, it should also get you quite a high Scrabble score.

*Quite a Few Places North West of the Capital

P.S. I know you can't use proper nouns in Scrabble

P.P.S. for those unaware, I'm not really taking this seriously.

Just call it West Coast and be done with it, we had East Coast under DOR which did the job so just call it West Coast with the HS2 services just called HS2.

There saved millions in consultation fees.....

Forget LMS and Avanti, what about M&S Express ;) Midland and Scottish, and Express indirectly suggests London.

That’d be a well recognised British brand to succeed Virgin Trains ;) you could even rebrand the shop as an onboard M&S Simply Food ;)
