Super 60s gutted most of the old tech and inserted new. There are no old chips in there anymore.

You can use FPGA technology as well.

Somewhere, not in London
Brush Traction still fully supports the older electronics, and the interfaces and logic are all fully defined at build so one can easily integrate a fit form function replacement of the old logic controllers with new.

Fairly standard engine, though probably usually lower rated
Quite a number in small ships like dredgers, trawlers, ferries. Should be possible to pick up bits from ship breakers yards.
There are a number of spares dealers, such as
http://www.lincolndiesels.com/engines/mirrlees-blackstone/mirrlees-blackstone-mb-275

Whats more likely to be a problem sourcing is the various electronic control systems which use seriously outdated technology

It would be interesting to know how the Super 60 DB/Colas/GBRf locos have done on failures per mile as against the originals

I heard once that one particular 60 wasn't to be supered until it failed. It never failed. Which is astounding considering the amount of failures on other units

Two of the 60s had half the super sixty work as a pilot. One the engine work and one the electrical work.

60011 was one

99 possibly the other.

Reported on WNXX today that the 5 locos, 006, 050, 060, 081 & 086, were lined up behind 66101 for movement to a viewing location so presumably somebody has registered interest

Interesting photo on WNXX today showing, just, 60086 in the maintenance shed, does this mean it has an admirer prepared to take it to a better place?

Parts recovery is sadly more likely for all these 5. I think 60086 is the first to go through.

Presume the buyer is Booth's or somebody similar. Hope I'm wrong.

With so many 60s out of service and DBC under some pressure to clear Toton out, it won't be a surprise to see them starting to go for parts recovery and scrap

From what I can make of it there are currently 21 in service with DBC and 10 with GBRf, while there are 28 out of service at Toton, 27 in Toton Yard and 13 in Toton Compound with 1 more at Crewe EMD, of the 69 out of service 4 belong to GBRf and 4 to DCR

I honestly can't think why any other potential user would want to buy the 5 engines currently for sale, other than GBRf and DCR for spares and/or to make 1 or 2 usable locos from the 5

Some news of at least one of these 60s, Raxstar have announced on their facebook

"We have bought a Class 60. Any interest in the loco 60050 or spares please message us. Thanks"

I was actually on the look out for a new garden shed so I may give them a ring ......

Up to date info on WNXX shows

006 & 086 to Ron Hull Rotherham, 050 to Raxstar, 060 & 081 to 'Private Sales'

Interesting that the four undergoing Super60 for DCR all came from Crewe while the rusting hulks at Toton are little more than spare parts and scrap metal, of course it's up to DBC how they do business

WNXX now showing 60081 sold to Locomotive services....

Seems an odd purchase for LSL, I would think that it may well be for external refurbishment only and then display in Margate, a refurbished for use Class 60 would be a technically difficult and expensive undertaking

I remember 60081 on an engineer's train at Bournemouth just after it was repainted. Total rust bucket, you could see all the body filler under the paint. I hope this is not one of those idiotic 'save it because it has a special livery' occasions.

Fix it, sell it on for profit. Surely the only reason to buy it.

Far, far, far more easily said than done, a Class 60 is a totally different animal to something like a 37 or 47, DBC and Wabtec are the only people with the know how, let alone the access to spares, to put a 60 back to working order, anyone trying to have a DIY go at fixing one is looking to get their fingers really badly burned, scrap and spares is the likely outcome for these with the possibility that 081 will become a non running museum exhibit

So is 60081's future destined to be cut into unique ebay auctions? I know the engine is dead but it can't much of a future can it?

I would imagine that the barbecue was created long before the loco was put up for sale.

The 180s make for much better BBQs as you don't need to buy any coals for them

There was an article in the current issue of Railways Illustrated, apparently confirming 3 of the above will be scrapped......

I don't have the mag to hand as I am at work.

Indeed, as reported before 006 & 086 have gone to Ron Hull and 050 to Raxstar, while they could still theoretically be bought the likelihood is stripping for spares and then scrap

News of the ebay auction, the 60081 BBQ attracted 14 bids and went for £460, good news for the Samaritans
