Very few Stansted to London services run as 4 cars these days and certainly not on a planned basis.

Normally the loading is very unevenly distributed throughout them as well, with the carriages closest to the terminal when Stansted Airport and closest to the gateline when leaving Liverpool Street always being heaving and the front of the train being virtually empty.

Do the new 745s have big wide gangways like the class 700s?

Yes they are similar.

Hopefully that will help with overcrowding making it easier for people to move right to the front of the train, if they wish to find a seat... I am responding to the following quote as well:

Yes I've seen people getting to the end of a 4 car unit and not realising they can get through to the next unit on the Stansted Express, so should help with that.

@dk1 have you heard anything on the grapevine regarding 745s starting on the Norwich's?

To be fair it's quite a long walk from the main station entrance to the far end of the platform (as those who catch the XC services on the small platform or the GA Cambridge ones will know). I can see why people with luggage just hop on under the main covered bit.

You can use the other set of escalators but I don't think they're signposted and when arriving they are further away from arrivals.

Can’t come soon enough another torrid day on the GEML. 1P47 15:00 Norwich to Colchester (planned engineering work with buses to Marks Tey, EMU forward), failed between Diss and Haughley Jn with an air leak, limped into Stowmarket to terminate just a tad over two hours late. Cue consequential disruption to other services, including local branches being cancelled due to crews being trapped/delayed. The first arrival from the Ipswich direction for three hours is just about to arrive at Norwich.

Anyone know what caused the air leak ? On some occasions in the past it has been due to striking something.

Given the number of 745 trips to the capital recently we can’t be that far off a service train ?

I don't think there are any publicly accessible MTIN figures for the LHCS but last annual report in January had them at a very high MTIN, higher than the new stock is likely to achieve for several years, if ever. One does wonder how that's possible with all that's been going on, or whether given the concerns about current maintenance it has dropped off a cliff since last year.

Quick maths - 30 4-car 379s are being replaced with 10 12-car 745s. Unlike most new stock deployments, that one's very straightforward.
Wait a minute what about this issue with the curved platform at Hackney Downs I thought that was preventing the 745's running on the West Anglia Main Line.

Only that they would like introduction gradually from the December timetable change but there are rumours abound that it will be later in 2020.

Yikes! A shame that it's not going to plan, looking forward to trying them out. Sounds like a few more months of pain ahead. What are the issues, lots of shall things or a show stopper?

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

It's more like 20 4 car 379s (10 8 car formations) being replaced with 10 12 car 745s- the additional 10 379s operate Cambridge services (in particular, 3 12 car services in the peak direction). It is an uplift of capacity for Stansted, especially as they're standard-only, but then Stansted Express services are also commuter services for Bishops Stortford and Harlow.

Not aware of the exact problems causing the delay to introduction. Plans are afoot to extend leases on legacy stock and locos so something isn't right. Shame really as they are excellent units and the service is under such strain at the moment.

‘It will have been either 003 or 005 as I believe they are the only two in use so far.

745003 was at Liverpool Street (platform 10) around 1300 today, clearly on test runs, and looked very impressive indeed (my first time seeing one of the GA FLIRTs "in the flesh").

My guess would be the Norwich in 90 as the first services to keep it simple.

I also saw 003 at Stowmarket this afternoon. Impressed to see it displaying that it was calling at all stations from Manningtree to London. Doubt that I will see Harold Wood and the like displayed again.
