I've been on 2 separate 350/4's in the last week where the heating failed in coach B. The conductor made an announcement that none of the on-board staff have any access to the heating controls whatsoever, and that all adjustments are done at the depot.

Is this true? Also, given both failures were coach B, is there anything different about that coach's heating that makes it more likely to fail?

It was 350/406 and 350/407 for anyone who wants to know.

Funnily enough I've repaired one of those unit's heaters today, so hopefully it'll be a little warmer next time.

The heaters are the same on every vehicle. On a 350 the bodyside convection heaters are run off 750V supply, each vehicle having a cubicle on the underframe that distributes this but is controlled by the roof mounted HVAC module. It stands out on the TOCL car the most as this is the only piece of underframe equipment adside from the brake frame.

No adjustments are made on depot, they're set by manufacturer.

I believe so. It’s come up before some years back when people asked about altering the temperature settings on SWT 450s.

I have worked in large buildings where no staff could access the heating controls (apart from the main power supply to the system). All settings including time of operation and temperature were controlled by a company in Sheffield.

A lot of people struggle to understand how to use a thermostat, which should only be adjusted a small amount to change the temperature.

It is indeed true, we cannot control the heating in any way on 350s
