E tickets are much more convenient for me, so I'd like to continue using them, but if this BoJ issue is likely to be a problem then I will go back to paper.

I agree. Today I bought one from Manchester Victoria to Preston intending to travel via Wigan. When I got to Wallgate my ticket showed 'expired' with no option to view the barcode or plain version.
