I was in a rush so bought an m ticket on the virgin trains app - off peak return London Glasgow. On the return I activated it but it says it's only valid on day of travel. Surely that's not correct for an overnight break of journey at say Preston?

Does it say that for both portions? The return portion is valid for a month!

There is also the risk they might try to prosecute, but it seems fully defendable to me. But I’m not a lawyer.

I now use GWR as they have the e tickets and give nectar for all journeys. However

  1. they don’t sell all tickets
  2. The blurb on the ticket says anytime return... no break of journey ... subject to National Rail conditions of carriage

Not actually doing an overnight break of journey after all, but I will see if I can get the ticket tomorrow.

If you needed to use it again anyway it would simply appear grey, explain that you've broken you're journey overnight and continuing your journey.

This is the official internal advice provided by RDG - agreed.

Some TOCs including VT use the TTK app which will easily show the previous scans of that ticket - so a time and date and a location of BOJ shouldn't be too hard to verify by the staff.

Ok. So it's bad copy on the virgin trains app more than anything else? E tickets are much more convenient for me, so I'd like to continue using them, but if this BoJ issue is likely to be a problem then I will go back to paper.

e-tickets (which can be shown on any device and can optionally be printed) are fine; it's m-tickets (which require activation) which are to be avoided.

Correct, though some e-tickets (notably GWR's I believe) have the wrong BoJ information on them - at least they don't grey out, but it is a cause of pointless arguments that would be solved by simply removing that text entirely as per regular orange tickets.

I agree. Today I bought one from Manchester Victoria to Preston intending to travel via Wigan. When I got to Wallgate my ticket showed 'expired' with no option to view the barcode or plain version. Mad.
