Every one I know who was on shifts (who swore by them at the time), who was subsequently offered days has always jumped.

It's not so much the amount of time 'at home', it's the time of day when you are at home that matters, (not much fun in the pub on your own at 7am in the morning).

well you don't know me, travelling to and from work at the same time as everyone else, never able to get to the bank, always needing time off for doctor/hospital appointments, give me nights every time, still at home with the family in the evenings, able to go to bed in the mornings and sleep until naturally awakening, if any problem sleeping able to catch up later, unlike day workers who, if they can't sleep at night are knackered the day after at work.

Admittedly not everyone can cope with nights and each to their own Most people have difficulty because the do not accept that they still need 8 hours sleep.

Phil, sorry it was not meant to criticise you, merely a personal observation. No offense intended.

I wonder how many of the executive bean counters have worked shifts, nevermind 12 hour ones?

Put it this way, I've done it many times for no extra pay. Staring at screens for 12 hours plus a day does you no good. You leave work physically fine but mentally nackered. Goes with job the further you move up in finance. At least the railway pays for your time when you work over.
