Cleethorpes toilets are free but require a valid train ticket to be shown at the ticket office (which isn't open all the time) who will issue an access code. This applies also to people requiring the accessible toilet.

Do any other stations do this? Does anyone wish to share the access code on here?

What's more, the nearby public (ex-council) toilets have been privatised and only take cards for the 20p charge (ie no cash).

Ones which spring to mind is on Merseyrail where the toilets are kept locked and are unlocked by the ticket office on presentation of a valid ticket.

Though it does help that Merseyrail ticket offices are staffed for the full period of service - that isn't the case even at major stations on much of the rest of the network.

Between the sea front in Cleethorpes and the council toilets in the car park at a 20p charge is guess what the station toilets so why would anyone pass them to use he council ones? Thats why you need a code to get in so that its rail users only. At one time they used to employ a student at weekends and charge to use the toilets for the none rail passengers which usually was far more users than the rail passengers. All the day trippers coaches all park in the car park next to the council toilets but walking to and from the sea front nearest to the station they pass though the station to get there so its why not call and use the station ones. The station staff did tell me that in summer the toilets get blocked with the sand been washed off kids and kids swim wear etc all going down the drains.
Would non passengers pay 20 p to use the toilets? I wonder.

Walsall is the same, I have to show my ticket and the ticket office staff press a button to unlock the door.

How long has this been going on? It's 2-3 years since I last hit Cleethorpes but I often used the bogs on the station (unrestricted walk in) when coming in from Donny.

Since anti-social behaviour/vandalism on the station went through the roof over the last year or so.

Grimsby station toilets are now the same too.

Lots of smaller stations do it to prevent the local scum/smackrats/pondlife (delete as appropriate) from gaining access. If they vandalise the one toilet on a smaller station no one can use it hence keeping it locked. Toilets at stations are meant to be for railway users only but if you were desperate I doubt you'd be prevented from using them.

One that does come to mind as a pain is Long Eaton which had it's toilet closed permanently when the local council opened a public loo in the adjacent car park for a small charge. This has now been made radar key only so there is no toilet at all available now.

Witherspons over the road. If you can be bothered to scale the stairs!

As others have pointed out it will simply be due to the high risk of vandalism of the toilets. If everyone left them as they wished to find them there probably wouldn't be a problem. It may not even be customers who cause damage as if they were previously open presumably anyone could access the station.

In Scunthorpe station, there's signage on the entrance to the toilets that a valid train ticket is required to access them, but in practice, this is never enforced every time I've been.

Thirsk station has a single universal toilet. It is only available during opening hours and you have to ask the ticket seller for the key. For over a year it was a portaloo style affair in the car park but this was because of the sewer having collapsed, since fixed. Never heard anyone asked for their ticket though!

It seems rather silly that the accessible toilet isn't just on a RADAR key.

Unfortunately, the system for RADAR keys is being abused. Far too many people are buying RADAR keys on eBay. I admit I am one of them

Are vandals buying them to cause damage? If not, what would the issue be? That you can buy them (officially too, not just on fleaBay) is quite useful for people who due to e.g. age need fast access to a toilet, whereas I doubt your average scally even knows you can, or if he does he probably doesn't want to spend the money on getting them just to cause vandalism.

At Sleaford, you have to show your ticket to the counter for them to give you a key for the toilet. It's a warm, clean room so it's worth this little task to keep it that way.

Having used them once, that's how it works at Cleethorpes too, though they give you a bit of paper with the code on rather than a key.

Why buy them when you can steal them of a real disabled person.

They do this at Moorfields where the (four?) toilets, nevertheless, often seem as if they haven't been serviced for some considerable time. Moorfields used to have toilets at platform level but now you have to go up several escalators and through the ticket barriers.

They also do this at Lime Street LL but there is only one toilet which is frequently OOO.

The only decent toilets on ME in the city centre are at Liverpool Central. Chester is also OK and Hooton has a couple of decent WCs. But its a pity that the new Merseyrail trains will not have toilets. If Glasgow can have toilets on its suburban trains, why can't Liverpool?

I agree about the new Merseyrail trains, seems like a missed opportunity, but I imagine it's due to the expected ticket dodgers who would probably monopolise them.

What I find extraordinary is ticket offices that shut up shop at some ridiculous time like 13:30 and after that the toilets are not available. Very little consideration for human needs. Then blokes get arrested for going behind a tree!

There is an issue with this in the UK generally which means some people are effectively housebound. It's also gender discrimination because a woman can't as readily "use a bush".

That said, Merseyrail at least in theory has the ticket offices all staffed for the full period of service.
