I certainly expect sitting under the pantograph would be the last place anyone would want. I never sat there unless the train was full as I enjoy looking out the windows

As it happens thats where I was, and for much of the time Geoff Marshall too!

Its true that you don't hear the motors or compressors, but I wanted the sound of the pan going up and down at Drayton Park - without the delights of small babies crying / children talking / etc. (as per when tried on a normal service train)

313's still exist on the south coast, so if I need sounds I can try motor coaches there.

btw, the tour went reasonably well, apart from Network Rail banning us from some rare siding tracks which we were supposed to be using in the Letchworth area.

The photo stops were somewhat manic - loads of people trying to get very similar views; because of the carriage in NSE livery it was not simply a case of saying that people should have got their views when the trains were in daily service.

I noticed that while following her on opentraintimes maps. Why path it if you're then going to ban it?

I am not sure how including these sidings was arranged - from what I overheard being said it seemed as if one person said OK and someone else (more senior) said no.

Eewww, that looks horrible, neither one thing nor another!

The photo is great but the train was a visual mess.

Some of my pics....

jokes aside...its quite nice to see something in NSE for a change 8-)

the rest if it on the other hand.....i think the plain white was done as it was badly graffiti damaged down one side, so the vinyl was also badly damaged with the removal process

surprised they diddnt use the blue and grey one as part of the tour

Blue & grey one, as in 313201?

That is DC only these days

A fun day out - and great to see so many people on the platforms following - but looking forward the the actual END with hopefully Big Blue doing the honours. I remember riding the 4-PEP+2-PEP on L&SWR when they were brand spanking new; trains from another world so it seemed at the time.

Nice to meet you yesterday Simon - I was sat behind you in 064's trailer for most of the tour. I moved to 134 for the Hertford - Moorgate section for my fill of the motor sounds. Look forward to seeing the rest of your archive footage.

The tour was thoroughly enjoyable and worth every penny. I can't speak highly enough of the on-board staff: they were fantastic, but there is one grumble and that is with the station staff at Royston. I know they've a job to do, but manners go a long way and a rude, passive-aggressive tone from the very moment the 313s arrived was not in keeping with the rest of the day. It just felt hostile at Royston. Chalk and cheese compared with staff at Kings Cross and Hertford North who were welcoming.

I'll really miss the GN 313s. Superb servants and it could be a long time before an EMU class stays for 43 years on its original route, especially in London. Maybe it's personal bias, but having ridden two abysmal LO 317s later in the day, I can't help thinking that the production-PEP stock has aged a lot better than contemporaries like the 317s and 319s, to name but two.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Sad that these are finally on their way out. It's hard to believe they're relative rail antiques now.. I'm of an age where PEP-generation units still felt fairly new and shiny, especially in NSE colours on the NLL after years of filthy and knackered slamdoor stuff.

Still, good opportunity to trot out this great clip I found on Youtube long ago - the Great Northern Suburban railtour on the newly-electrified Great Northern back in 1976. Spot the shiny new kids on the block from 23 seconds in..

After many hours of processing by my home computer, my on-board highlights 360 video is finally ready. It's comprised of the legs between WGC and Hitchin East, and Moorgate and King's Cross via Ferme Park. It's also VR-safe for those of you with headsets.

Dunno.. it's easy for patience to wear thin when there are so many idiots about who ruin it for everyone else.
