I certainly expect sitting under the pantograph would be the last place anyone would want. I never sat there unless the train was full as I enjoy looking out the windows
As it happens thats where I was, and for much of the time Geoff Marshall too!
Its true that you don't hear the motors or compressors, but I wanted the sound of the pan going up and down at Drayton Park - without the delights of small babies crying / children talking / etc. (as per when tried on a normal service train)
313's still exist on the south coast, so if I need sounds I can try motor coaches there.
btw, the tour went reasonably well, apart from Network Rail banning us from some rare siding tracks which we were supposed to be using in the Letchworth area.
The photo stops were somewhat manic - loads of people trying to get very similar views; because of the carriage in NSE livery it was not simply a case of saying that people should have got their views when the trains were in daily service.
