A colleague asked me today what this sign is and I don’t have the answer.

Was sent these as a text so not sure where they were taken but it has me puzzled.

Last lap of the race!

Seriously, something to do with clearances maybe?

I was wondering the same thing having seen them in the cess, down slow for a few 100m or slow past St Mary Cray station.
The only difference is the signs are at 45 degrees, ie as a diamond and not a square. Does this make a difference?

I’ve always treated a diamond version of this sign as an OHL stanchion indicator?

It doesn't make a difference how it's orientated. Software differentiates between the black and the white, essentially enbling the application of a cartesian coordinate at the central point.

That’s them, although I’m sure they’re disappearing!

Not noticed them before, they are quite new. Although not been down past Cray for a few months. I suspect that they are going to carry out some works. The bridges have been renewed and I believe there will be some housing going in towards Swanley. New housing at Cray too. Maybe there has been some shifting of the banks.

The location is Kirkby (Merseyside) on the Wigan bound platform (facing towards the Liverpool platform) if it's of any interest?

Travelling on the WCML I have seen the diamond shaped ones and accept that they are used for laser scanners.

However, I've also noticed the square ones (like limited clearance signs, but obvs blue instead of red) in the cess and near to and facing a foot crossing. Two examples are; immediately South of Stoke on the main line; lon the same route towards Colwich. These have lettering on both the white squares, and the upper left one might say 'WARNING'. Reading them is a test for my eyesight at speed, but what is the lettering? Are they certainly for lasers?

:D

That'll teach me to respond to a post without reading the whole thread, I saw @civ-eng-jim 's post and got trigger happy

Er, now I'm confused. Your response was correct.

Red/White is limited clearance. Blue/White is no refuges.

What can also happen is that you get signs on both sides <D

Don't think I have seen any no refuges signs on both sides yet, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Have you got any of the newer 'yellow warning triangle' limited clearance/no refuges signs without an accompanying 'checkerboard' sign yet? Every one of the new yellow signs up here that I've seen has also had the classic signage right next to it. The old ones can convey their meaning from a fair distance away and everyone knows what they mean.

Not seen the new signs for clearance or the new(ish) signs for low adhesion.

I prefer the old ones too. But in all honesty I'm rarely on the track so I would defer any preference to those who use them on a regular basis.
