E-mail address that wont go to junk/spam

Hello all,

I currently use Hotmail but it seems recently it's been annoying when sending E-mails to other coach operators asking about visits, they never seem to get the E-mail, and when eventually I get time to call them they say they never had an E-mail and I explain it's a Hotmail address, then they say usually they go straight to the junk. Apparently we get the same thing on our work system too where most the time hotmail addresses go straight to junk/spam.

Is there any alternative E-mail services I could try, I would try Gmail or Yahoo but I'd like to know if they are any better in terms of E-mails going to where they should go, or if I should try something else.


Any help appreciated!

I use Gmail and it seems pretty reliable.

Do you use an appropriate/relevant subject heading for your emails?

If you're regularly emailing the same coach operators, it might be worth asking them to add your email address to their whitelist.

There's no reason why a message should go to junk just because it's from Hotmail. They are one of (if not the) largest free email providers.

I have heard of that problem previously - some systems were set to block messages sent via Hotmail because it was commonly used by spam senders; I think there are computer algorithms that assign messages as junk if they receive too many messages from the same - or similar sources.
My computer newsreader sometimes puts messages from a "gen list" into the spam/junk folder, possibly for the same reason.

[DIGRESS]I remember back in the late 1990s when I was working for a Tech firm, one of the older blokes was asking about a free email provider so I suggested Hotmail but unfortunately for him he browsed to Hotmale and got a bit of a shock :D[/DIGRESS]

Hotmail has never been much use for avoiding spam bins, and you'll probably find that half the mail you want to receive is being spam-binned by them in return. Gmail has traditionally been much better. I probably wouldn't bother with Yahoo though, since there's every chance it will go the same way as Yahoo groups sooner rather than later.

The hotmail address itself might not be the issue, it depends on what sort of email address you've chosen. Lots of random numbers looks more spammy.

That said, Outlook spam filters are rubbish. Emails from our scanner at work end up in the spam folder as often as not.

To answer the question, I use Fastmail. Ten dollars a year subscription fee, but worth it to avoid the spammy ads in free suppliers.

All of that makes it into my spam bin on Gmail. Mind you I also use a domain and a different address for every site. Almost all of that spam for me comes from sites using email addresses they harvested from the MySpace data breach

I've been using Gmail since it was a limited invite-only beta back in 2004. Never a problem getting emails to intended recipients, and Gmail's spam folder is second to none. It's some to take a peek in there from time to time to see the raft of hot property investment opportunities waiting for me in Hull or Doncaster..

If they're the largest free mail provider then it stands to reason that they'll have the largest percentage of potential customers (of those who use free email). Not very smart to consign them to junk.

Hotmail can trigger spam filters if combined with other factors. I think that mails with attachments or embedded links are less likely to go through than if you use your own domain.

If anything I see most issues when people combine Hotmail with outlook. Nobody's going to deliberately block Hotmail, but the systems are largely automated. a provider which originates a large amount of spam, and doesn't comprehensively sign the emails, and reports a less-than-completely secure route for sending email to the originating server, is going to trigger rules.

Interesting (or probably not). The last time I looked at a hotmail email that wasn't getting through it was missing DKIM. As you say, this looks fairly reasonable, and I'm not dealing with this stuff day-to-day anymore, so I'll bow to your better judgement.

Thank you very much, I have set up a Gmail account for occasional E-mails, thing is although I could ask to be 'white listed' I tend to only send one to an operator I've not contacted before.

Equally I can get e-mails from someone that hasn't contacted me before on hotmail that goes straight to junk, and the subject isn't something unusual, whereas some unusual subjects (one worded, mis-spelt etc) that are clearly spam goes to my inbox (though it isn't a common occurrence, only a very very small amount)
