Might be of interest on here, if not appropriate or relevant please delete........

Channel 5 tonight, 21.00, the first of a four part series following Londons public transport enforcers.

I assume that there will be a rail element............

It was scheduled for 21:00 Monday Channel 5 in my TV guide but it was wrong as at that time they had a program about motorways.

It's in next week's TV listing magazines as starting on Channel 5 on Monday 21st October 2019 at 9.00 pm.

First of a four part series includes the police swooping when a fare dodger flashes what appears to be a dangerous weapon.

Enjoy if you like that sort of thing!

Anyone watch this last night (Monday) ?

For a C5 show I thought it was quite good and not "hysterical" as is their norm with a subject like this.

Interesting insight into the work of TFL revenue protection and the methods used to catch the culprits.

I watched the programme and enjoyed it....What interested me was the fact that with the Oyster card, you are tracked where you go,when you go and along with cameras everywhere and in particular at barriers you can be seen...This applies to the tube,as the programme showed the buses as well...The level of info available both on buses and tube was very eye opening...Beware they can see you !!!

IF you're being investigated for something, and I'd assume that once they open a file they must keep detailed records. I doubt they're allowed to randomly check on people, as that would run a risk of a rogue operator deciding to stalk someone if they so wished.

So, I am not particularly worried and I don't think anyone else should be.

BTW, I note you weren't saying you were worried but thought I'd say this on behalf of anyone that might be concerned.

If they have that level of data you would hope they also have a good audit trail of who is accessing it and why....

And of course if you have registered it they actually know who you are rather than having to put a name to the faces via the credit card you used to top up the Oyster.

The level of tracking can be very useful in more mundane ways, if you're willing to ignore the big brother aspect. For example, when I was regularly using TFL buses I'd often get directed emails telling me of changes, diversions etc to the routes they knew I frequently used. Far more convenient than big lists detailing every route which I'd assume few people would bother reading.

I don't know if they still do this or have stopped in (over?) reaction to GDPR.

They still do it.
Use of White Hart Lane/Northumberland Park on matchday results in e-mails about possible disruption when Tottenham are playing.
Unfortunately no warning about seven goals incoming from Bayern Munich ...

I watched this and found it very interesting. The build up to them catching the fat Chinese man at North Greenwich was gripping. I can’t believe so much effort goes into catching people.

I've just watched the last one- the narrator and RP guys were saying 'Holborn', if you get my drift.

As an aside, I've not seen this programme yet but fully intend to so I've not read upthread.

I was on the Sheerness branch today and RPIs boarded for an early Christmas present. to conduct a full ticket check. A few PFs were issued unsurprisingly! I heard one group who were waiting for their mate to be dealt with discussing this programme! And having a good laugh at their mate's expense of course.

Maybe people will see this programme and realise that it is taken seriously if you get caught?

Still seems to be a lot of Windows XP lingering in the IT from what I've seen watching this!

Quite alarming really when even Windows 7 is starting to go end of support...

Sorry off topic but XP still forms the back bone of many retail it systems!
On topic,I’ve recorded the episodes but not watched yet, have to be in the right mood to watch these sort of programs as I get really wound up seeing the cheek of some people in society!

Just an observation, but all but one so far of the fare evaders have been from BME groups. Is there any reason why this would be so?

Only episode 3 is available on catch-up, does anyone know why the first 2 have dropped off?

This was not so subtly picked up in a previous post in this thread (and has since been deleted). I can think of a couple of explanations:
- It's filmed in London where there happen to be lots of BME people
- It's Channel 5, who seem to like picking out sections of society (poor people on benefits etc...) and demonising them making "entertainment" out of it.

High BAME population in London, and on average they aren’t as wealthy (more “need” to avoid paying). Possibly more likely to be on buses as commute shorter distances (wealthier living further out, though that is changing with gentrification).
Or it could be cultural in that the BAME folk made better TV with the way they reacted?

The TfL bods seem to waste a lot of money on colour printing. All those Oyster system Print-outs seemed to have a colour TfL heading at the top when nothing else on the page required colour.

London's white British population as of the 2011 census was 44%, so almost half. There have now been 2 fare evaders so far that seem to fit this demographic.

I am aware of C5's obsession with poverty porn, but I would be highly surprised if TfL would play up to this on a programme, given the diversity of their own workforce. I don't honestly think that C5 are purposely only showing BME offenders for entertainment.

Thank you. A more understandable answer.

The guy that was travelling from Colliers Wood to Stockwell or Finsbury Park followed by a bus on a zone 2-3 Travelcard - why was this flagged as fare evasion?

I watched episode 2 on catch-up yesterday and it said it was available until 2023... I was about to ask the same about episode 1....

Exciting program! If only it was filmed in my local area it would be better (but then again we got Dom on the Spot doing London Midland only the other year).
I do find it strange they go straight to prosecution referral rather than Penalty Fare so often?
Also; does London have different PF rules to the rest of the country? Seemed very steep rates!
