I've been trying to find a good place to go away in the spring with my wife. We just want to go for a weekend or something so want to stay in the UK. Anyone got any good suggestions? We live Sheffield so too far south probably wouldn't be ideal for a weekend and obviously good train connections please!

I was looking on a site that do package breaks, but I wasn't really sure what kind of place would be good.

Suggestions on places to go would be great!

Without knowing your interests I would suggest Scarborough. I went for a weekend just over a year ago and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Some parts are a bit tacky but other parts are really interesting. Whitby is also worth a visit.

Edinburgh for a city break - a few hours by train (go first class!) or the Peak District for countryside; and train+tram will get you to Fleetwood over here for a very bracing break!! Also over here is Grange Over Sands, quiet, coastal, edge of the Lakes, and with a station, probably 2 - 2.5hrs from Sheffield and, although I don't know for sure, will probably have inclusive hotels.

ECML from Doncaster then you have London, Durham, Newcastle, Edinburgh to go at.

Liverpool or York if they are too far.

Totally agree with all these suggestions.

I would also add Llandudno. In early May each year there are 2 big events taking place in Llandudno - the Victorian Extravaganza, and the Transport Festival. In May 2020 these are taking place on the weekend of the 8th May which coincides with the bank holiday for the VE Day celebrations.

Whitby is lovely. Nice alternative vibe, very relaxed and in wonderful countryside.
Lovely, but a long way round by train! Lovely journey but pushing 4hr from Sheffield, bit quicker using Coastliner from Malton or the bus from Scarborough.
Actually Malton (or Pickering) is nice too, or there's Skipton if you like country rather than city or sea. And Bradford is on the up, it's in all the papers today :)

When we did Whitby in September we did trains to Scarborough and then the X93 bus to Whitby. Should be about 3 hours from Sheffield I guess, still a while but depends what people are after I suppose.

Hmmph. Got a day off next week so that's where I'm going. Might be a bit stuck for something to do on a wet Thursday in November - but anyway. Poulton to Fleetwood (bus), fish and chips, tram to Blackpool, then ??? before beer and the train home I suppose.
On the plus side the No14 stops at Poulton station now!!
Pity the ferry is closed for winter as it's a nice ride on the bus up the other side to Knott End and then across the river to the tram.
The ??? - http://www.blackpoolheritage.com/httours/timetables/ appears it's weekends only right now :(

Q for the locals; when the ferry is running is it purely a tourist thing - or do locals use it for shopping/commuting/school/college as a regular thing? I would assume it's popular with shoppers from Knott End, but can't see it being used for commuting as it would stop in bad weather (?) so couldn't be relied on?

Oxford or Bristol are both interesting cities, with direct trains from Sheffield, and have plenty to do for a weekend. I thought Bristol had a similar feel to Sheffield actually which may or may not be what you're after!
