That is brilliant. I have looked at the website and am interested how you found the answer so quickly. You seem to have to know the locomotive already before you can display their workings. Is there a page where you can see all Deltic workings for a particular day?

To be honest I just remember someone did this for A4 steam locos a while back so I figured as Deltics are the diesel equivalent surely something similar would have been done. A quick Google confirmed my thinking. I was 6 years old when they ended service so I didn't really know them too well.

As for how I found it so fast - well D9001 is the second loco in the fleet. Had it been D9021 it would have taken me a bit longer ;)

If you were so motivated you could offer to build and improve on what info exists already to create a more comprehensive searchable database.

There may only have been 22 Delt1c’s. However there were numerous external detail differences to identify locos.

Thanks for looking and taking the time to find an entry. This website is a treasure trove of information. I took a number of photos of Deltics in the seventies, most of which can be clearly identified. I have compared each one with this website and where an entry exists it seems to stack up, so I'm willing to accept that this one is of 'St Paddy'. My original notes said it was 9005, but someone on Flickr kindly pointed out the nameplate was too small and could only be one of the 'racehorses'.

As to building and improving the website, I wouldn't be so arrogant to suggest that I could or would. The fact it exists at all is good enough for me.

Any ideas what distinguishing marks can be seen here? Someone once identified a Class 40 for me because they knew about the positions of numbers, logos and grabrails etc. Are you the go to Deltic person? (I hope you are!).

The Deltics that were named after regiments also had regimental crests on some of them. The green howards and royal scots grey spring to mind.

The racehorses are St Paddy, Meld, Pinza, Tulyar, Alycidon, that I can remember.

Single line nameplate rules out numbers 2, 5, 6, 10, 11, 14, 17, 18 and 21.

Lack of regimental Crest means it isn't 4, 8, 13, 16 or 22.

So even without the information above, it's down to the racehorses- given that the date is known, I guess the next steps would have been finding out which locos were in works and which were still numbered in the 9000 series at that date.

I don't remember seeing any TOPS-numbered diesel until December 73, a few months after this picture was taken. That doesn't mean there weren't any just I don't recall seeing any.
