Northern have a fleet of 331s being introduced which deal with any issues with the worst of the 319s - they do not need 185s to substitute for 319s and they are now using 195s on the remaining diesel routes where 185s operated.
The 331s aren't to replace the 319s the 323s from WMR are.

Getting reports that quite a few 185s are running around with a engine isolated. Is this due to them going off -lease and the maintenance being cut back?

Northern's original plan was that its existing 17x323s would be withdrawn and replaced by the 331s. Now Northern is keeping those 323s and returning 319s instead as the 331s enter service. 6x319s will have been withdrawn by the end of this week and most if not all of them will be gone before the additional 17 WMT 323s start to arrive.

No way will Northern lease costly 185s in place of cheap EMUs.

Costly 195s could be the only DMUs available...

Are the reporters sure that it's isolated and not just running in eco-mode?

Don’t they normally have issues with overheating around this time of year as the radiators get clogged with leaves/detritus?

No, that's the summer time.

There's usually a steady amount of engines isolated for all sorts of reasons.

Some are short term and will be awaiting a visit to the depot for attention, these could be comms issues, coolant leaks, fuel sensors/actuators etc, stuff that can be done overnight.

Some need engines dropping and swapping or cooler groups repairing so need to be planned in around the train plan and can take a day or so to sort, but may take some time for it to actually stop (time of year may see the drops prioritised for wheel sets etc).

Theres one case I'm sure the train crew are aware of which I noted the words "the snail" written on the desk. It has an engine isolated for a wiring issue (long lead time for parts and requires cooler group and fuel tank dropping) and the day I had it found a charge air hose damaged and the engine stop solenoid sticking - unfortunate timing for both to occur. I hope it's a little quicker now...

There has always been units running around with an engine isolated but from my observations maintenance has slipped. The units are that intensively used they just aren't getting the care and attention that they need - remember the Mk5 are supposed to be in service by now and many 185s are running on STP amended diagrams that 802s are planned to be on which probably isn't helping

Wonder if that's the unit I tugged back to Manchester on the back of 9M05 on Monday. Two engines out but with an engine out on the lead unit too didn't make for a sprightly performance.

Nice to see 108 is back up to 3 engines tho, always had a reputation for being a shed but now that unit is hell fire!!! XD

Possibly but this was going back a few weeks now so could be any one of them! I'm inclined to agree with your first post, they're used as intensively as ever and they are approaching the age of the 158s they replaced.

Interesting comment about 108, it was turned around fairly quickly. Like any fleet, there are units that you seem to see all the time for a whole number of reasons and there are some you simply don't, or if you do it's only planned maintenance.

Are the Cummins engines on the 185s also derated to appx 700bhp as per the 22x fleet?

The engines will chuck out the rated 750hp although by the time power auxiliaries have taken their bit plus the expected transmission losses within the gearbox and final drive etc the power at rail is closer to 550hp, I don't know the actual figures but it works out about 9hp per ton. The traction advantage of a 185 however is the gearing to 100mph which gives the edge over a 180 or 22x which feature the same engine and despite different traction packages are similarly rated.
