Hiya - sorry, I know this is probably quite a basic question, just wanted some reassurance.

I'm about to buy a season ticket for the first time between Leicester and Kettering. Am I right in thinking that this would also be valid for journeys to/from Market Harborough, which is between the two stations? And also, if I'm travelling from Leicester to London, am I entitled to just buy a Kettering-London ticket even if the train doesn't stop there? Many thanks :)

Yes, that's correct. A season ticket entitles you to make unlimited journeys between the stations named on your season ticket, by any permitted route. You are allowed to start or finish short at any station on a permitted route (the ticket might not open the barriers but just ask to be let through manually).

You may combine your season ticket with another ticket if making a longer journey, the train does not need to call where you change from one ticket to another if one of your tickets is a season ticket.

Note that some railway staff are poorly trained and might try to claim this is not allowed. It absolutely is allowed.

And it doesn't need to be an annual or monthly ticket to benefit. A humble weekly season is just as flexible.

If you can afford to get an annual season, this would normally additionally entitle you to Gold Card discounts and might give you savings on the London trips (depending on times etc). There’s info about this and other aspects of season tickets on the National Rail Enquiries website page https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/season_tickets.aspx#discounts

Edited - memo to self: don't post on here before having coffee and remember to check the validity area first. Apologies for the incorrect info (see below #7).

That's all really helpful, thank you! There's no barriers at Harborough so that shouldn't be an issue, but I'll bare in mind about staff! :)

Thanks for the advice! I could afford one, but the nature of my work means I'm only likely to actually be based in Kettering for a couple of months so it doesn't work on this occasion - but I'll definitely keep it in mind for future!

A Leicester - Kettering Annual Season ticket does not qualify as a Gold Card as both stations are outside the Gold Card Area.

Sorry, got a further question on this. I'm thinking of travelling from Leicester to London on a day when the main line is down, meaning that NRE reccomends travelling to Nuneaton and changing there. This means I don't physically pass through Kettering - am I able to still use a Leicester-Kettering season ticket and a normal Kettering-London ticket, or do I ironically have to pay more for a slower and less convienient journey?

As you are not going through Kettering, you do unfortunately need to pay more.

You'll probably find it cheaper to split at Nuneaton, as separate Leicester - Nuneaton and Nuneaton - Euston tickets are cheaper than a Leicester - St Pancras ticket (assuming you travel with London Northwestern from Nuneaton)
