I know. I live in hope that one day the combined might of Abellio and Wabtec may be able to deliver what they promised...

How many were intended?
Absolutely no clue what diagrams were meant to run today with the line closure between Perth and Dundee units are all around lost. The one northbound diagram that's normally a 170 on Saturdays ran as a refurb and ended in inverness at 2101 this evening. I could count at least 6 from experience 0453 ex Inverness 0600 ex Inverness and the 0845 ex Inverness all showed 3 coaches rather than 4 all day and also the 1942 Edinburgh to Inverness being short formed as well so perhaps 7 were meant to be out but only 3 came.out 2 refurbs 1 classic

Spotted last night in Queen Street. I think this was an 18:40 Aberdeen service?

Those vinyls produce an interesting ombre effect when they get dirty.

1Z85, the 17:49 Dundee to Arbroath ran as an HST last night... Normally 1L85 is all stops, but last night because it was an HST Balmossie, Barry Links and Golf Street were not called at.

Looked like a refurb power car with "classic" carriages behind it at Inverurie yesterday afternoon.

I don't think I've seen a non-refurb power car in ages. Refurb power car is a given. It's the coaching stock that's the question, and the vast majority HSTs that do run seem to be refurbs.

There are (or at least very recently) were a couple of them about. They're the exception rather than the rule though as you indicated.
There aren’t any - the last pair went to Brush a few weeks ago.

If I am reading the twitter feed correctly, it looks like five is the highest number in service so far.

Another mess. My ten year old is waiting at Perth Station for a replacement bus. Train failure apparently. 2 coaches instead of 4,1208 Glasgow to Inverness.

I've seen two refurb sets operating today, 175/030 on the 1130 Edinburgh - Aberdeen and 131/136 on a driver training run from Haymarket to Dundee.

I know I'm beating on something that has been discussed at length, but the fact that GWR and XC have hit the ground running with their refurb sets does drive a bus through the excuse that it's Wabtec's fault. As someone pointed out previously, the power car reliability issues are likely due to most of the power cars ScotRail receiving are the examples with the quirky/less reliable (GEC?) traction motors. There should be plenty of and traction motors available to address that issue now.

To be fair, GWR and XC's sets haven't been without issue - some of them directly due to the quality of rebuilds. There are often sets running about with doors locked out of use.

The fact that new stock with all its snags and issues is peforming better than 40+ year old stock does make me wonder if all this perseverance with old trains is actually as attractive as it first seemed.

With the benefit of hindsight there were things that could have been done differently but, given the amount of electrification that appeared to be on the cards when the fleet plans were made, it was a smart decision. As it stands now there's just not enough running under the wires to justify anything other than pure diesel trains - which would likely end up being in service for 30 years or more.

The HSTs represented a comparatively cheap fleet of diesel trains that could provide service for 10-15 years, by which time the increase in track km under wires, combined with improvements in battery/hybrid train would make an all-new fleet of hybrids a realistic proposition.

But they are cutting about. Scotrail sets are just siting their teasing passengers as they trundle past Haymarket on a packed 158 or 170....
