No, the person behind will probably stop it. Anyone frail enough to be hurt by a suitcase small enough to fit on a train should probably use the lifts and take care not to sit opposite a luggage rack.

Good luck if it’s fallen a while before it reaches you. Bit of a waste directing people with heavy luggage to the escalators if it means you having to direct others towards the lifts.....

The main problem at Leeds is there is only 1 lift on platforms 6/8 which is also too small and slow.
This lift has to be used by anyone who cannot use the stairs or escalators to access other platforms from the main station entrance and also when changing to/from LNER services. So can cause a long queue for the lift. a second lift would be useful here to speed up the queue and as a backup in case one is out of use for any reason.

It would depend how many of each whether it's worth it. I bet more people with luggage than frail people. And the barriers obstructed large luggage not heavy.

For some reason around 8 of the departure screens have been taken down from above the gateline, although 5 still remain up so a bit odd as to what is going on there

Also they've been working on the front of the station for weeks and weeks now, they're obviously doing something on the roof too as the 'Leeds Station' lettering didn't last too long before being removed!

Well there's the small matter of the station façade that is still to be put in place, otherwise the south concourse is going to get very cold very soon!! Though to be fair the first part of the framework has now gone in, so hopefully the big hole at the entrance will soon be filled!

I am sure 90% of passengers though the station would be content with a couple of straightforward next departures boards that list the time, destination and platform like the one you can see above the platform 2 buffers or above the station office. However the screens with all stops on them above the gateline can only show a platform number every other second and I also noticed they also get full of delays and cancellations quickly and then don't show anything useful.

They also stop displaying platforms several minute before planned departure - however most of my trains to Shipley don't leave on time so it must just be delaying passengers even more than is necessary.

I assumed that those screens were moved to stop departing passengers lingering in front of the exit barriers.

Yeah - seems a daft idea to get everyone to stand watching the displays, crowding the route to and from the gateline.

Anyone entering from the northern concourse, or from city square, has to cut diagonally over to the departure side of the gateline, straight through the heart of the crowd.

I don't know if NR have ever bothered to do pedestrian modelling on Leeds station but it would show how terrible it is generally. This looks like another instance of having to rethink something that should really have been thought through more beforehand!

Within the station, the shifting of the gateline has made life a lot better than everyone crowding around the end of platforms 5/6 looking at screens as the Aire/Wharfe/Harrogate commuters disgorged and tried to make it through to the other platforms but it could still be much improved by extending the footbridge over platforms 1 - 6 with steps facing out of the station but somehow I doubt that'll happen.

Whilst extending the footbridge might help, the problem is where would you put the access to it, especially from P2-3? Those lower numbered platforms are considerably lower than P4 & upwards, and as a result there isn't a whole lot of platform space until you get past the end of P4, by which point you would be almost under the bridge alignment (if extended), making a stairwell / escalator difficult to provision if facing the flow from the trains.

You can't install ticket gates at a station without doing lots of pedestrian modelling first. So someone -Network Rail or Northern- will have to have "bothered" as you put it.

I’m not sure this is the reason, as it seems lots more than just the screens have been taken down. All the cladding has been removed on that side as well, as well as in certain other areas.

Also all the shop names have been removed from where they were affixed as well.

I doubt that all white customer information desk will stay clean very long, it’ll look awful when it gets dirty and scuffed.

I noticed this morning a set of bins on the bridge at the P16 end. Progress.

Perhaps the most curious thing is if you look directly above Millie’s Cookies there is some white text that just says ‘Coming Soon’...what’s coming soon?! It’s certainly not Millie’s Cookies as that has been there forever!

These screens are starting to be reinstalled, with cladding behind them. It looks to my untrained eye that there was / is electrics works still going on, as every now & again new cables are appearing around the edges of the concourse. This was certainly the case with the façade, the station name went up & down again, with additional cabling appearing in that area. This seems to be associated with the façade framework now going in, presumably for more lighting, displays etc. The good news is, especially for the Northern helpdesk staff, the glass work for the façade was on site this morning as I passed. Hopefully this will be in situ before the next icy blast forecast for the weekend.

Upper Crust coming soon. Initially it just said upper crust then they’ve added coming soon, when you saw it they had probably taken the upper crust bit down

Also a set of bins by the bay platforms. They are truly spoiling us.

Just a pity the up escalator from P8 is knackered.

As if by magic the shop signs all went up overnight!

Ticket barriers seem to have been tweaked though - reject passback is now worse than ever for me! I was on the concourse a good 15-20 minutes and still couldn't get back in after that length of time!

Also for the first time ever I heard them testing the 'Suspicious package found evacuate station immediately' announcement

Looks like the front is nearly complete now, just the doors to go in!
