This thread seems to be very limited to modernish stuff. I can't beleive how little railway history people seem to know, I mean the Fell is pretty famous.
Here's my contributions

With respect to the 455's, the /8's and the early 317's had the ugly fronts which were "improved" with the 455/7's, /9's and 317/2's.

Despite the front ends, the 317's had lovely interiors when new - esp the /2's
Interior of 317/2 was same as 317/1 when new. It was changed during refurb when they became 317/6

Bulleid Q1 0-6-0s built during WW2; met a need for a powerful go-anywhere locomotive but they were so ugly that Bulleid's kids were stunned speechless when they saw their Dad's creation for the first time!

Class 153(modified cab end)374/700/717/777/195/331

They all need to be attached to a rocket then sent to space and never return

I know the ribbon glazing on the earlier Turbostars and so on must be a maintenance nightmare, but it does look good. These new Aventras with their window frames are looking distinctly 1960s to me.

What?! The Desiros look great, the 455's aren't really ugly but they don't look better than the Desiro's. I don't really find any trains ugly, the 319s aren't the best looking and neither are the 376s but I will have to agree on the Class 43 Warships.

455 is a beauty!? The first time I caught one in my early teens, I was aghast at the look. The livery never helped...
Being used to 313s and 321s, it was certainly a shock.

While accepting that tastes are subjective, anyone who thinks the Class 455 is a beauty has weird tastes :D

Just had a look at a Class 385 for the very first time. How can the weird front cab design even be considered safe? How can the driver possible see anything on his/her right with that obstruction in the way? Why couldn't Hitachi design a conventional proper front cab. Not so much ugly as grotesquely weird.

In these threads there's usually a consensus that the 455/8s are uglier than the /9s... but tbh I prefer the /8s because at least they look a bit distinctive. The /7s and /9s just look like souped-up Sprinters.

The Southern cab aircon units look hideous though, that's for sure!

Couldnt've worded it better
Sire, I disagree with your statement and think it would be advisable to take an eye test. Does that work?

Agreed.

If it was just the 380, I'd understand. But the only crime Desiro's suffer from is blandness. The headlights fix the 185 and the fitment of gangways help the rest.

What worse than an ugly train?

A beautiful train made ugly out of spite.

On an unrelated note, Thompson A1/1 No. 4470 Great Northern.

Oh that’s a good one.

The giants of steam did have a few off days. Although I must admit I can't immediately think of anything Gresley or Stanier built that was truly ugly. Then you had Collett who designed the Kings and Castles, truly beautiful locos. Then he got into the smelling salts...
