On East Midlands Tonight just now they briefly said that Bombardier in Derby is taking on 400 new workers as it has a record order book.

I can't find any news about this on the internet but is this true? If it is true then its good news for Derby and British Industry.

Probably about 2 years too late, unfortunately...

Just seen the 6:30 news on BBC iPlayer apparently they are taking on 400 new workers but there is software problems with trains at the moment.

Too late? In what sense?
Presumably deliveries being substantially behind, but part of that is having to rewire the 192 S-Stock units for the new Thales CBTC signalling taking up space and staff so lots more staff only really makes sense when software and S-Stock sorted.

Is this additional to what they were looking to take on earlier in the year or inclusive? i.e. is it partial re-announcing...

The 701 Delivery window was originally 17 months but they are now promising 12 months so it look like they are attempting to catch up as much as possible.

There are no recent “new” orders been announced, are there?

However there are plenty of delayed orders, the Anglia and SWR Aventras are very seriously behind their due dates, and the latter is a pretty large order, 750 vehicles.

And LNWR to follow as well.
Cairo monorail (innovia) announced in the last few months as being Derby built and another Innovia family order for an as yet unnamed customer on BT's order book recently (with no factory announced either)

Yes, I was only thinking of Domestic orders. Is LNWR considered much behind the planned timetable as well?

The Aventra glut will be completed within 2 years though, I wonder how permanent these jobs will be

No but it could be unless they get on with things.

Also showing that they can get things back on track production wise could be good reputationally

I have had emails about wiring assembler jobs with Shorterm, so at least some of the roles are probably being filled through agency.

If I wasn't currently working I'd certainly be tempted, but I am.

Should have been building the new units for Northern instead of the Spanish crap we have got. Never in all my life have I seen so much failings. If a 195 or 331 was a new car, you would have been in touch with 'Trading standards' Absolutely shocking they are, and Northern management are in denial.

Lets not forget in 2011 when Bombardier lost the Thameslink contract the government said that EU law forced them to give the contract to Siemens, the future of Derby Litchurch Lane was uncertain. Since 2016 new train factories have been announced and Bombardier Derby has a record order book and is taking on new staff.

Given all this is anyone surprised Derby voted to leave the EU in relatively large numbers for a City of that size? Also given this news I don't see why the Derby South MP (Margaret Beckett) is still banging on about how we need to put the 2016 result "back to the people".
