Hi,

Could someone please help me understand the LNER electronic seat reservation system...

Example from tonight:

I boarded at Morpeth and sat in a seat which was showing red and said 'reserved to Kings Cross'. No one was sitting in the seat so I assumed that the person getting on at Edinburgh going to KGX failed to get on and I was now sitting in their seat.

However, did I misinterpret the message and is it just reserved to KX but could be by multiple ticket holders e.g. EDB to NCL then NCL to KGX and I risked being kicked out at NCL?

I've tried to look online but cant find the answer to my question.

Thanks in advance

Helen

The seat is reserved from the start point mentioned to the finish point mentioned if the seat has not been occupied by the start point then it is available again

Normally, if it's reserved later on in a journey, it shows an orange light and, for example if the train is at Edinburgh, 'Newcastle to Kings Cross'. If it's reserved for two journeys back to back, it normally shows a red light and on the top line of text, for example, 'Edinburgh to Newcastle' and then below that on the 2nd line of text, 'Newcastle to Kings Cross'.

The seat doesn't mention a start but as I got on at Morpeth and that was the 2nd stop, the 1st must have been EDB so fine. Thank you.

That's an improvement, because on Pendolinos I've been unseated when I've taken an unclaimed seat labelled "RESERVED" which turned out to be reserved in two bits with no indication of this.

That's assuming OP was referring to an Azuma unit (which they may well have been). The older Sensa units fitted to the legacy fleet work a bit differently.

Sorry, yes! Completely forgot that their HSTs and 225s had electric reservations!

Correct for the legacy fleet. They have limited space on the displays and don't show a start point for the reservations or a break in the reservations. It's therefore possible that it could have been reserved EDB-NCL then NCL-KGX as you say.

The Azuma displays are a bit more detailed as @NewSt correctly explained.

Hi,
I wasn’t on an Azuma, it was an old HST.

Is there anyway of telling back to back reservations?

Thanks
Helen

There isn’t, no.

The only thing that might show it is if you connect a device like a smartphone or tablet to the on train WiFi and on the login page there should be a “seat finder” where you can view a plan of all the carriages and their seats which are colour coded red, yellow and green depending on their reservation status. You *might* (been a while since I used it) be able to click on an individual seat and view it’s reservations in more detail. Not 100% though.

if in doubt, the train crew can check the reservations using their work phones so just ask if you need to know.
