There’s more to life than just railways, and what better way to start with the subject of music! Wherever you go, it will always be around you and make you feel good most of the time. Obviously we all have different tastes so I thought I’d start this poll to find out which genres you prefer and see if there are any that have a vast majority in popularity with rail forum members over the others.

You may choose up to five options in the poll. My top 5 are as follows:
  1. Old school rap/R&B
  2. Disco/Funk/Soul
  3. House/Dance
  4. Modern rap/Grime
  5. Alternative/Indie

Jazz and Blues should be separate as should Country and Folk, Disco, Funk and Soul plus what about:

60s pop
70s pop
Motown
Psychedelic

I'm sure others will have suggestions too.

I wouldn’t be able to pick five. There’s probably about five that I don’t enjoy on there though.

Indeed. I'd vote for three of those!
And what on earth is Techno/EDM/Gabber?
On second thoughts not sure I want or need to know.

I pride myself in having a wide range of musical genres that I enjoy, including jazz and rap, but my main source of ear food is electronic music, mainly Trance, Drum & Bass, House, and all the sub-genres of those.

I’ve added these options in the poll

I refuse to tick the techno box on the grounds that it has been lumped in with gabber and EDM.

It’s a very hardcore kind of rave music, most commonly associated with the club scene in Amsterdam.
To be honest EDM is not a genre, it’s a family of Electronic Dance Music regrouping House, Electro, Trance, Future Bass, Dubstep, etc.... It’s not very specific to say EDM (it’s like saying your favourite train is any EMU) and it’s a bit unfair to put it alongside Techno and Gabber (which are part of the EDM movement) which makes it look like these two specific genres of electronic music were picked out by the OP to show the "extreme" and negatively rave-associated aspects of electronic music that techno and gabber are. There’s extremely varied aspects of electronic music in the EDM family, for example trance and house have some very melodic, "organic", emotional, or even orchestral sub-genres which should make a lot of people rethink their feelings and perception about electronic music.
Either you generically put EDM as a poll option, or you state the EDM genres individually, but not both especially when it makes the EDM movement look negative.

I’m sure this wasn’t the OP’s intention and if he’s not into electronic music I understand the shortcut.

What constitutes a 'genre'? Some of my favourites are missing:
Brass brands;
Cinema/theatre organ;
19th century/early 20th century mechanical music;
Big bands;
50s pop;
Doo-wop.

I expect I have weird tastes! nb - there's a lot on the list that I do thoroughly enjoy, too (and a lot that sounds to me like a cement mixer!).

I think a separate category for 2010s music music would be satisfactory. Very different from noughties music.

Also, where is Breakbeat Hardcore??

Some people also like to substitute 'Techno' for 'electronic music', when electronic music is much more diverse than that.

Excuse me? Where is Progressive Rock?? (Prog Rock), a whole genre featuring some of the UKs greatest bands is missing. ELP, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Jethro Tull etc......

My votes were:
90s pop/Britpop
Classic Rock/Rock n roll
Alternative/Indie
Jazz/Blues
Country/Folk

Jazz/Blues & Country/Folk should be separate in my view as I like Folk but not Country. And I dislike Reggae but like Ska/2 tone bands such as The Specials and Madness.

I chose 5, but I'm with Cowley, it would be easier to list the few that I don't like !

At this time of year, I particularly enjoy listening to Christmas Carols. A favorite CD is Christmas with Emma Kirkby( and the Westminster Abbey Choir):

/ Christemas Hath Made An End.

Some interesting, lesser known material and ancient versions of popular carols make this a must at this time of year.

My 5 years in a Cathedral Choir have left their mark !

Indeed!....Progressive Music, before it was shortened to Prog, was a genre in itself in the early 1970's

Dammit. Oom-pah isn’t on the list either!
I’m out.

Only two, and neither are on! Vocal and progressive trance, and schlager. Don't think two genres could be further apart! But right now tuned into Ibiza Sonica Club, lovely relaxing progressive house/trance.

I've only voted once for Psychedelic. I would have voted for it all five times if I could. :lol:

It would be nice for people to mention which would be their favourite album from each genre they voted for, choosing Psychedelic i'd have to go for Love - Forever Changes.
