I've only voted once for Psychedelic. I would have voted for it all five times if I could.

It would be nice for people to mention which would be their favourite album from each genre they voted for, choosing Psychedelic i'd have to go for Love - Forever Changes.
With vocal trance we don't really have albums, mostly tunes between 7 - 10 mins+ so we rely on hour-long DJ mixes.

Must admit, as far as pop goes,t.A.T.u are my very guilty secret, but they did sign my Russian flag! Lots of their stuff was trance-mixed which passes my quality test. On the kudos side I do love the Cocteau Twins, One Dove and Xmal Deutschland. I don't think you can beat Cocteau's *Loves Easy Tears*.

I've just been listening to Captain Beefheart and according to Wikipedia that's four genres (experimental rock, blues rock, avant-garde, free jazz) for the price of one.

My favourites are:
Prog Rock
Blues Rock
Classic Rock
Psychedelic Rock
Country Rock
I also like others, including some 60s/70s pop, country & folk - but not quite as much as those listed above. To me, melody & originality are the most important features, not repetitive / formulaic "beat" or "noise".

Excuse me? Where is Progressive Rock?? (Prog Rock), a whole genre featuring some of the UKs greatest bands is missing. ELP, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Jethro Tull etc......

Absolutely, how could a poll on music miss this!!!!!

Progressive rock isnt an option. Is that an oversight? I'll vote when that oversight is corrected

Doesnt singer/songwriter count as a genre? (Al Stewart, Paul Roland, David Bowie, Adam Ant, Joni Mitchell, Sophie B Hawkins, Suzanne Vega etc)

Folk rock has also been overlooked (Steelye Span, Fairport Convention, Blackmore's Night, Renaissance etc)

Only 5 choices? Awww, I've got 6!

OK, here goes:
Classic rock/Rock n roll
Punk/Punk rock
Ska/2 Tone
60s pop
70s pop

Runner-up:
80s pop/New Wave

I don't like anything done on computers or anything with less than two chords, and if I had to pick a favourite microgenre, it would be power pop.

This thread amuses me. I'd previously commented that I couldn't possibly tick the "techno" box while it was lumped in with another genre that I absolutely detest, but it highlights how fragmented and diverse our musical tastes are, and illustrates that sometimes you can't just take a particular artist and put them in a box. Nor can you take something like "house" and give it a single category - is it deep house, tech house, acid house, happy house, hard house, disco house etc... Some people will hate it all and label it as "that awful rave music". I'm not a big fan of rock music, therefore I cannot easily distinguish between various sub genres (I think I like prog rock), but if I said to someone that I liked prog rock and they asked me to name a favourite act, I'd be lost!

Likewise with "classical" - I could say that I love classical music, but "classical" embraces everything from "namby-pamby-cherry-orchard music" (a term used by a rather brash trumpet-playing instructor that I once knew) through to the full-on stuff penned by the likes of Shostakovich. Bach's "Air on a G String" is far removed from the 1st movement of the Leningrad Symphony.

I couldn't tick five boxes. Well, perhaps I could, but I'd be ticking a different five boxes the next day depending on my mood!

You and Darlorich would both love John Cages track ‘4.33’. it is 4.33 minutes of total silence.

Only if (not) played on a grand piano.
As an aside,I once gave a friend a copy of a CD entitled "4.33 variations",which consisted of the (non)tune (not)played on different instruments.

It would be impractical to include every single genre and sub-genre as an option in a single poll, hence why I condensed some options into groups of two or three. I would add more options at this stage if the poll interface would let me do so.

Also, I think the reason I laid the poll the way it is was because I wanted to try and focus on targeting the general public as a whole, rather than just rail enthusiasts. I was surprised to find that there were a lot more votes than I expected for jazz/blues, country/folk and classical/opera, possibly down to the demographic of this forum community. Next time, I would probably split these as poster #2 mentioned upthread. If I was asking the same question to a group of typical students (like me) however, I would expect there would be a lot more votes for Modern Pop, Rap and Drum & Bass. (I am still the only member that voted for the Modern rap/Grime category at this stage!)

Metal with a specific fondness for Power metal and Symphonic metal. I also like some classical and classic rock though.

That's interesting, I must've missed this box as I wanted to tick it but it turns out I've only ticked four...

Edit/Update: turns out we can modify votes, so that's done.
