Repainting a set into original livery will recreate the era when enthusiasts avoided them like the plague.

A fitting send off.

Different generations of enthusiasts like different generations of trains. The enthusiasts you mention probably loved the Deltics, but (and this is long before my time, so I may be wrong) the generation before them probably hated the Deltics because they took away their beloved steam locos.

Plenty of enthusiasts grew up with HSTs, (myself included), so will be sad to see them go. Most enthusiasts seem to avoid 800s like the plague, but I guarantee in 40 years time people will be sad to see them leave.

Apologies if I rambled.

If they're doing this, what about a railtour with a 43 at one end and a 91 at the other like they were when the class 91 was first introduced?

That would certainly be a fitting send off for this era of the ECML. I'd love to see it! Although I'm sure the 91s will get their own farewell tour sometime next year.

The record holders are 43159 and 43302.
Thanks for the answer.

43102 was in Swallow, 43159 in Executive.
43102 now being 43302, I presume. Any reason why the LNER powercars were renumbered when re-engined but the East Mids and GWR ones kept their numbers?

I'm sure the 91s will get their own farewell tour sometime next year.
After painting a whole set in blue and grey for the IC125 farewell, I really hope they will put a whole IC225 set in Swallow for a farewell tour, complete with the small swallow badges on the noses.

Alright I get the point! I knew I'd get shot down the moment I said it...
People are very passionate, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. To be honest, regardless of the livery, the fact that there will be a chance to enjoy the train is more important.

They aren't going, though. They're being displaced from their former duties by more modern stock and relegated to secondary workings, as were the Deltics and A4s that preceded them. It just means you have to travel a bit further afield to see them in action :)

It's only a matter of time before they're gone for good. Because of accessibility requirements and in the future tougher emissions regulations (I hope anyway), their days are numbered. I adore the HSTs, I remember seeing one for the first time when I was five at Cardiff Central, and being in awe of them. For me, no other train will evoke similar feelings of nostalgia, but it's time to let them go.

I'd honestly be surprised if we still have them past 2025. Sorry if I went off an a tangent.

As the above tweet was from me, Tim Dunn (and yes, I noted the number typo as soon as I'd hit "tweet"; there's no edit function) I can confirm it is genuine. A number of media, including me, were briefed yesterday and asked to spread the word. UK Railtours will be selling tickets for this charter soon.
Typo or not, an informed source tells me that 43302 isn't one of those being repainted.

Really? That does surprise me. I don't know why they would repaint two power cars when 43 002 exists but I can't complain. Anyone know what till happen to the set after? I assume it won't transfer to EMR (although that would be nice), surely it will go to either the NRM or the 125 group?

Lots of rumours flying around what happens to sets currently...

I would doubt the set would go to EMR as it would be a backwards step in PRM compliance terms for contrasting colour doors. As for the NRM - they won't have space for a full set (perhaps one or two vehicles?), and doubt 125 Group would be interested as it hasn't got IC70 seats.

The NRM already have a HST so I doubt it. I'm sure the 125 group would happily take it. Perhaps a rail tour company could take it up, such a classic livery is bound to attract crowds, and I'm sure people would want to ride one after the hardness of an Azuma seat!

I'd be surprised if the GWR 'Castle' sets were withdrawn by 2025. I'd think they might make it to around 2030. Scotland? If they are running reasonably reliably by the end of 2020, again they might carry on past 2025. In the overall scheme of things the emissions from the GWR and Scotrail sets don't amount to much.

Anyhow, I'm pretty confident there will still be a couple of powercars running on the GCR(N) (or as it may be then, the GCR reunified) for many years after 2025, plus some charters. (I'm pretty sure you meant 'in regularly service on the national rail network' though).

I can only remember the swallow intercity livery on these sets. But 43002 looked stunning so seeing a full set in yellow/blue will be fantastic and I'll be out for this

ScotRail are reported to be aiming at rail decarbonisation by 2035. In the Nov2019 issue of 'Modern Railways', Transport Scotland's Director of Rail is quoted as saying "The seven cities will be linked by electrified routes - that's our working assumption." Unless the 'Inter7City' services are planned to be a mix of 158s and HSTs (in which case HSTs could be withdrawn as each route is wired, leaving 158s on Aberdeen-Inverness which I'm assuming will be the last of the 7cities routes to be wired), that pretty much means IC125s will stay on in Scotland until 2035. What other rolling stock options could there be?

Going back to the farewell tour, a full rake in heritage livery will be quite something (is blue & grey confirmed or will it be like the window stickers on GWR's farewell tour, which showed a set with a different past livery on each coach? shame they didn't do that to the real coaches for that tour).

Would anyone have an estimate for when the tickets are likely to be released? Likely next week or the week after?

In fairness, they did say they would have released ticket details by now, so the question is entirely justified.
What they actually said was "More news in a future newsletter in just a few days’ time.".

Leeds play at Fulham that day - but it still shows as a 3pm KO - so that can’t be a Footex for that match...
In that case, whilst twiddling thumbs waiting for news, I’ll just have to speculate that this is one half of the Cavalcade into Kings Cross with the HST! Long stop at Peterborough and a mysterious stop at Finsbury Park. Does make you wonder ;)
