i am going through a petty phase and making sure I always claim my delay repay from Southwestern railway.
Today I took my 6 year old nieces to bournemouth (From Eastleigh) for the day. They were struggling with the journey home and when we got to Southampton airport parkway our connection was showing cancelled, the next train was over 15 minutes later and would have missed the bus we needed so I thought damnit and paid for a taxi. I know I can’t claim for that but thought I’d be able to get my delay repay 15. When I look at real-time trains it shows the train ran with a 7 minute delay (though oddly live tracking still shows it en-route nearly 2 hours later: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W36835/2019-11-22
I don’t know if it actually ran or not.

Should I just do the delay claim for the 15-29 minute delay due to cancellation or do I need to do anything else?

Use RTT with caution when there is disruption and cancellations.

In reality the train was cancelled and was terminated at Romsey.

You cannot claim DelayRepay for a journey you did not make.

You can (potentially) claim a refund for your unused ticket.

I suppose that makes sense, I wasn’t delayed 18 minutes of i didn’t travel. It was a Eastleigh to Bournemouth day return and i didn’t get all the way home as i abandoned then. Does that mean (strictly) no claim is possible?

I agree with yorkie that this is probably one to write off to experience.

Do you think asking some "goodwill gesture" from Southwestern Railway can do?
I would never directly ask for a goodwill gesture, as you are effectively saying that they don't have to give you anything. And agreed with previous posters that a delay repay claim would be out of order.

In the OP's shoes, I would submit a customer complaint (NOT a delay repay claim), explaining clearly and succinctly what happened, and asking for a refund of the taxi fare paid in an attempt to mitigate the anticipated delay. It is highly unlikely that the taxi fare will be refunded, but provided your complaint is reasonable, a small goodwill gesture might instead be granted. I have had several such payments over the years, usually based on the delay-repay I would have been entitled to had I caught the next train. Spelling out in the complaint how late you would have arrived at your rail destination had you waited for the next train would be very helpful.

The one absolute certainty is that the OP will get nothing if he doesn't complain.

Thanks for all the advice. I guess I will chalk it up to experience. I was interested in how the (potentially) uncancelled train would affect things but I guess I would only have had a claim had I waited around to find out. The taxi fare was worth it for getting us home an hour earlier than we would have if I'd waited it out (as a 10 minute delay on the train would have meant a 40 minute wait for the next bus).
