From the photo the cab looks not too bad, but where's the cup holder for my brew! :D

Hope the guard still retains full door closure control on the Class 397.

It's an excellent spacious driving cab and the cup holders are moulded into the desk on the right hand side.

The Guard is responsible for all train dispatch including closing doors however the Driver releases the doors under normal circumstances via ASDO. Should ASDO fail then the Guard has full control of door release. Trains have to be built DOO ready so the monitors are there regardless (they show more than bodyside images too) and multiple units have been built DOO capable since the 1980s so this isn't a new thing.

That is good to know about the cab and especially the role of the guard.
I did not think TPE were going down the DOO, route, so that's good as it's caused plenty grief elsewhere.

How is the second man's seat configured in the 397 cab, for route learning/ training/conducting as I know it's pretty useless in the 195/331 for forward visibility. I know it's not needed that often.
These certainly look the best of the modern units and would have been my preferred choice for the West Coast if they did a hybrid version as well.

So the top screen is showing ten door views, with space for another coach to be added?
What’s the bottom screen showing, the door panel the guard is expected to use?

The bottom screen is showing an internal vestibule camera which someone has selected. Crew can view live images from within the train (for Guards really) and if a passenger alarm or egress is activated the nearest camera can be viewed to see what is going on there. It also works for fire alarms, train end cameras and the pantograph cameras.

Secondmans seat is alright, better than a 195/331 as it is a full seat instead of a flip out perch. Forward visibility is restricted slightly because the Driver sits in the centre but not a massive problem.

Thanks. Are there any restrictions to make sure the driver doesn’t get distracted from looking ahead by stuff going on on screen?

10 tables per coach as per the 90s Mk3 (Edit: actually 12), everything fully aligned in Standard...very much the best of the bunch, and a whack in the face for the naysayers (again).

Apparently we've been told it's impossible to have:
1. Gangways (then came classes 350, Electrostars, 385.....)
2. Big overhead racks (then came Desiros, 800s.....)
And now we have:
3. Full window alignment in Standard.

This just demonstrates that everyone else is just making excuses, which is pretty much always the case for the naysayers.

Let's not forget the biggest lie of all...... ergonomic seats and the regulations rubbish.

Out of interest, do camera feeds from both units show up on the same screen when you couple them?

Yes. They go off around 5mph and won't come on until you tap the screen.

Thanks, can't see them being operated that way somehow.

Nor can I. It's not part of the franchise commitment, it's never been mentioned as a plan, and I'm sure TPE would be happy to do without the disruption it would cause. Long distance services need a second member of staff for passenger assistance and revenue anyway, pratting about over who did the doors would be a waste of everyone's time.

Is there a facility to record images , maybe in case of alleged offence when they might be needed by BTP etc..? They must comply with GDPR and privacy legislation !!

Images are recorded on all trains fitted with CCTV and have been for years. Northern's CAF units have 8TB of storage; recordings made while the unit is in an 'alarm state', such as if the fire detection system activates or a passenger alarm is activated, are stored in a protected state so as not to be overwritten.

397 003 was on the 1212 Liverpool-Glasgow today - ECS of course.
Still with a CAF sticker in the window.

Meanwhile it was a miserable morning for new trains in the north.
Multiple cancellations of 331s and Nova 1/3 from Lime St.
Also an EMR Norwich cancellation to frustrate those wanting to get to Manchester.
Further north at least 2 185s were substituting for 350s on the Scotland run, one terminating at Preston.

The excuses were either "broken down train" or "shortage of drivers".
I got the feeling it was all routine, with no evidence of efforts being made to run the advertised service.
When will it end?

397005 seems to be the regular on 5S41 from Preston to Glasgow in the last week. Even ran to a different path on Sunday and again today. Ran around 30L today.

Both 397003 & 397005 were working through Carlisle on Tuesday with both in the station at the same time at one point. I noticed that, while the table seats in second class were perfectly aligned to the windows throughout the train, first class passengers are not so fortunate!

Corbyn would be impressed - "for the many" :D

I'll have to have a nose when I have a ride on one, but you have a lot more flexibility in 1st as you're not trying to cram in seats in the same way. So I hope they haven't just been lazy about it and done whatever based on a wider bay layout than the windows.

One way to make things align with a window spacing based on Standard bays would be to have a 1st bay take up the full width of a window and both pillars, and alternate that with one airline row with a fixed half-table taking up the window width but no pillar. Not super-efficient on space, but if you want to be super-efficient on space you should probably bin off 1st anyway.
