Hi all,

Does anyone know the best places to be to get some 218s for haulage in Germany next February? Planning a trip out that way and quite like the thought of getting a few of them in.

Cheers,

FQ.

The best places would be the trains going to Westerland on the island of Sylt or in the Munich system to Mühldorf or the Zürich ECs.
No certainty though I am afraid.

Worth expanding on the Westerland trains: the 218s haul the Inter-City services. The regular RE services are hauled by Class 245 TRAXX multi-engine locos.

Also worth mentioning the Sylt Shuttle Plus service where a 2-car 628 unit is coupled to the rear of a car train so normal passengers can travel. Some of the car trains are still worked by pairs of 218s, so possible to get them that way as well. Despite having had all the “normal” Niebüll allocated Rabbits, I was fortunate to pick up three required locos out of four when up there earlier this month: a pair of loaned Fernverkehr 218.8 “Thunderbunnies” and a loco hired in from Railsystems RP.

Brilliant, thanks guys. I was looking at Munich as an option so it sounds even better now. The Westerland trains look good for a future trip too - are they from Hamburg?

Line runs from Hamburg, but the ICs normally re-engine at Itzehoe as that saves light engine movements in the rather congested Hamburg Hbf (amongst other reasons). Usually a 101 south of Itzehoe.

How many are on Mühldorf runs, I'm sure there's a few 245s as well

The Zurich ECs are a safe bet for a pair, subject to the electrification works, and I assume the Stuttgart-Augsburg-Oberstdorf IC likewise.
Stuttgart-Ulm-Lindau is affected by electrification work, and ISTR 245s are now in the area too.

Thanks again guys, happy to hang around Munich Hbf for a bit hoping for one either on a Zurich EC or a Mühldorf service

If you join the EuropeanRailGen group on groups.io there are normally a lot of DB diagrams in the files area, including many of the “Rabbits”.

Ulm and Munich both have a number of 218 diagrams, though numbers are certainly reducing as 245s infiltrate. Last time I was in Bayern, most of the lines east from Munich were 245 operations, expect where stock was needed to be moved for EC trains to Lindau. Be Kempten had good numbers and is located just behind the Hbf.

I thought Ulm may hang on to the 218s longer, but I guess their time is limited. The German Railway Society may be useful for you too.
