I must admit it does seem strange when after one franchise period in some cases, all station signs at all stations are replaced with something with a different font and logo, and rather than vinyl over existing signs, completely new metal signs are fitted with old ones being obsolete.
You can't be talking about GWR then, who still have some BR Alphabet signs along their network, as well as a pick'n'mix of Wales & Borders, Wales & West and Wessex Trains signage on most stations west of Pewsey and south of Bristol Temple Meads.

I believe many of the signs on the North Downs Line are originally, at the very least, from the Thames Trains period.

I wouldn't, what a waste of money and vinyl.
There is of course, the chance that Virgin have licenced the brand to First Trenitalia, which would be a nice surprise, and that the vinyls are being removed in favour of paint or a new Virgin vinyl which says “A First Trenitalia operation” underneath?

but then surely Virgin Trains wouldn’t have made such a song and dance about their tragic exit on Dec 7th

The majority I see around the country, not just in the west, are labels stuck over the same physical previous sign. Often if you view from the right angle you can see the old lettering underneath.

There was an idea to avoid this by standardising - I believe the unbranded SWT blue with a white border was to have been the standard, but it went nowhere.

I think when it comes to signage, that the new company should just vinyl over the current signs, which is what VTWC done with most of their stations, since some of the signs at the likes of Carlisle date from BR.

That should be a no-brainer (standardisation I mean, not the SWT version in particular). However much you are in favour of competition between TOCs, there ought to be an identity for the national network which is generally recognisable. Even the double-arrow symbol has been sidelined in some places. Arriving at a strange station in unfamiliar territory it should be immediately obvious what its name is.

Typical cringeworthy crap from Virgin.
I disagree. They have a sense of humour. Something the world needs more of these days.

Virgin's image is horribly cheesy and YAAAAYYYY LOOK HOW MUCH FUN WE'RE HAVING 'COS WE'RE SO ZANY!!!!!!!!, and it really gets on my nerves. I find all of their marketing and promotional material to be horribly grating, and I won't miss that at all.

There's a special place in hell for whoever came up with the talking toilets.

+1, but much too sensible.

I would never support nationalisation though standardisation of branding is something I'd certainly like to see. Too often stations become time capsules, revealing layer after layer of typefaces and icons.

Some of the YAYYY stuff is actually really catchy, but it gets a bit annoying after the while.

I remember when I first went on a Pendolino and hearing the talking toilet, safe to say it was very creepy.

Wow. Someone sounds grumpy. The world's miserable enough, learn to laugh every now and then.

Like it or not, that toilet message was so popular people entered a competition to voice it.

See, that's exactly the problem. I don't need to be told how to have fun by a bunch of adults acting like children. I'm not grumpy or miserable, I just can't stand Virgin's weapons-grade Gorgonzola levels of cheesiness. It would be quite nice if the WCML could be run by a proper grown-up TOC again.

So if it's not a public launch, will any of it still be embargoed, or are we all going to find out in a blaze of glory tomorrow evening even if not in attendance?

I really do disagree. One of my earliest experiences of Virgin was travelling back from uni on a pretty much brand new Pendolino. It happened to be Red Nose Day, and the Train Manager was including jokes in his announcment, and encouraging people to stop by the shop and make a donation. Little touches like that, the cheerful staff, the 'not taking everything too seriously' attitude is what has made them stand out to me - and I know other - from other train companies. At the end of the day, a train service is a train service and all a TOC can really do to stand out is customer service, something which Virgin have done brilliantly.

Embargoed press releases came out a while ago. The emargo is tomorrow evening. Having seen one, I can't think of anything relevant to this thread that won't be public knowledge by the end of the day tomorrow.

Couldn’t have put it better myself. Absolutely hateful. TPE are (in my experience) much better at customer service/image.

............ but they don't need to act like cheesy children in the process, it's cringeworthy.

I don't think they do. Just because you're an adult doesn't mean you can't have fun... and just because you work for a train company doesn't mean you aren't allowed a sense of humour.

Yes but Virgin: Never Knowingly Underbranded.

Also Worst Group like to brand things as much as they can get away with, such as the bonfire of much-loved local bus liveries to be replaced with white/pink/purple.

As long as they don't go for Barbie colors on the 390s, I'm not too bothered!

What do you consider a "proper grown up TOC"? I'd assume the mind numbing dullness of GWR or SWR. Modern TOCs lack an original identity and character, and Virgin is the only TOC left that has both.

Just like Stagecoach and Arriva then.

You may not have noticed that FirstBus is moving away from national branding and now has some extremely nice local liveries.

Whatever people think....

People don't like talking to other people on trains. If nothing else Virgin Trains, whether good or bad certainly got people talking on there trains. So some good came out of them, fluffy or not!

I never want anyone to talk to me or disturb me on a train, so if people are more likely to do it on a Virgin service, that isn’t a good thing for me.

Completely with you on that one. Likewise peppering my journey with corny gags etc.
