We apologise for the delay to your journey. This was due to a coach becoming uncoupled on this service having broken down.
Slip coaches are back!?

We apologise for the delay to your journey. This was due to a passenger being switched off for safety reasons.
I'm sure there are many who would like to be able to switch passengers off!

I got a few nice ones out of this:

"We apologise for the delay to your journey. This was due to a railway embankment being taken ill at a station it was supposed to."

Well for god's sake! If the railway embankment was taken ill at the anticipated station, why wasn't this planned for accordingly? Bloody rail industry, etc...

I bet some of you would actively welcome this one:

"We apologise for the delay to your journey. This was due to a passenger being caught on this train signalling system."

And finally:

"We apologise for the delay to your journey. This was due to a shortage of on-train staff being taken ill earlier today."

Look, will you railway staff please get your act together and become unwell when you're scheduled to do so? I'm sick of being delayed because not enough of you are taken ill. Sort yourselves out. Christ.

That seems to be the default reason given for delayed Virgin West Coast services now. A deliberate attempt at pretending to give information without actually giving any or accepting any responsibility for delays. The fact the train in front of the delayed one is probably also a Virgin train doesn’t seem to worry them.
I was on an ICWC train from Preston to Penrith and got a manual announcement from the guard that went on for several minutes about how the new timetable was unworkable.

I once heard an announcement that stated.
"We are very sorry for this delay, this is due to a severe delay on this train"

You've just reminded me of one I heard in the very early days of Virgin Cross Country (pre Voyagers). A northbound departure from platform 3 at Bristol Temple Meads failed to make it the full length of the platform before coming to a halt. The announcement came that there was some mechanical issue with the the train and that "we will try to minimise this delay as little as possible".

Whilst not an announcement, I've seen on a station board 'delayed due to unusually large passenger' which was rather unfortunate it missed off the word 'flow' to give a completely different meaning for the delay!
