Do all passenger trains through Huddersfield station call there?

Are there any passenger services that don't stop at Huddersfield? Have there been historically?

Going forward should Huddersfield be considered a compulsory stop on every TP service?

Thoughts?

As far I'm aware everything that passes through Huddersfield calls at Huddersfield.

There was an overnight airport service that didn't, a diversion route retainer from Sheffield iirc.

1. There is considerable passenger traffic both east and westbound at Huddersfield, and were there to be fewer services that called, they would be heavily overcrowded.
2. Huddersfield is a junction station with connections to the Penistone Line, and Brighouse/Halifax/Bradford
3. With no passing loop, a non-stop service would not be able to overtake a slower one.
4. As the route already operates pretty much at capacity, it seems unlikely that a service skipping Huddersfield could gain much benefit in a shorter journey time between Manchester and Leeds

Looks like in the new timetable, there is a 2245 Scarborough to Manchester Piccadilly service on Fridays Only which skips Huddersfield.

Services that skip Huddersfield generally are routed via the Calder Valley route for route knowledge retention.

There is or was one service from Manchester to Sheffield late at night that ran via Huddersfield without stopping (for diversion route knowledge retention) - but I think the reason it didn't call was to avoid confusing passengers and avoid abstracting revenue from other operators.

I am part way through a review of the Trans-Pennine service since 1960. So far I haven't seen any cases of trains that run through Huddersfield without stopping. (That sometimes used to happen at Deighton on wet days in a Pacer).

There's the Tuesday to Saturday 1B59 from Sheffield to Manchester Airport departing Sheffield at 03:25 (runs via the Hope Valley Monday, departing 03:45; doesn't operate Sundays), and the return working of the Monday to Friday 1B52 departing 23:30. Even though they're down on RTT as stopping 'for staffing reasons', they regularly run through non-stop in my experience.

Given Huddersfield is one of the busiest stations in Yorkshire, then it clearly should be a compulsory stop. Provides direct connections to various destinations too.

Only if NPR happens would you see Huddersfield not being served and that remains very unlikely.

Huddersfield is perhaps one of few stations in the Yorkshire area that generates positive publicity due to the presence of several now very famous feline residents!

All passenger trains through Huddersfield call there and I doubt that has ever not been the case in recent decades.

The exceptions are trains that are diverted or are planned such that they could be diverted, for example late night trains may not be booked to call at Huddersfield so they have the flexibility to go via the Calder Valley line. On occasions the Calder Valley line may be shut so these trains may go via Huddersfield without stopping there; also on occasions a delayed train may take a more direct route than booked to make up time.

Another planet...
There's also little time saving to be had by missing the call when still passing through, particularly in the down direction (towards Leeds) due to the slow reverse curve into platform 8.

Interesting that Huddersfield is such a key West to East Station, whilst its London services for many, many years have been woeful.

Found a similar service which currently runs on Fridays only that does indeed appear to skip Huddersfield: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y83009/2019-11-29/detailed

Last Friday's appears as cancelled on RealTimeTrains and any further back than that aren't listed, yet the service is present in the current TPE timetable.

I admit to being surprised given the size of the town how poor Huddersfield's north-south direct service is

I'm sure it's cropped up in previous discussions as reputedly the largest town by population on the network without any direct train service to/from London.

Some years ago (maybe 6 or 7), I travelled on an overnight service from Manchester Piccadilly back to York, that was booked to run through Huddersfield without stopping (and did so). As Platform 4 was devoid of trains, it being about 1.30am, it ran through at fairly good speed. I think it was subsequently diverted via Wakefield Kirkgate on its journey to Leeds and then onto York.

Unlikely, whereas it's a big town the population is only about 150k, whereas Bolton is a lot larger and that has no London service as far as I'm aware.

Wikipedia gives Bolton as roughly 140k and Huddersfield 162k - but that's the town, not the Borough (260k vs 440k - but Kirklees has a much larger urbanised area including Dewsbury); it's frankly very difficult to produce sensible comparisons (he says, as a resident of Bradford Met...) - and Kirklees has London trains anyway!

Kirklees only has London trains at Mirfield by Grand Central. Hopefully LNER will start their daily Huddersfield service eventually

Huddersfield is my 'major' station and I must admit, I'm not all bothered with no London service. I'd much rather see TRU happen to improve journey time to Leeds and Manchester for London services. Also would love to see fast services to Sheffield, better connectivity with Bradford and Wakefield too.

Speaking to a member of staff at Huddersfield, I think someone at LNER was scoping out Huddersfield not too long ago. However, until the remodel of Huddersfield station there is no opportunity to have a London service.

I've been on several passenger trains, usually at night, which have gone non-stop from Manchester Piccadilly to Leeds via Huddersfield.
