LMS would have been perfect. Anyone would think the trains run to those places though, can't have that!

There is only ONE place on the whole route where the west coast can actually be seen as well.

For what it's worth, I'm glad they didn't go with LMS. These retro names are getting far too repetitive, it's 2019 not the 1930s.

If they named it LMS it would just blend in with all the other retro names. Do we really need all the major TOCs changing their names to reflect a long gone era? If we want all our trains to look the same and have the same names, we should just renationalise.

I would have preferred an isosceles triangle!

(You have to thank your school education all those days ago. Who would have thought I'd be able to use the word 'isosceles' again? I'm happy now!)

I finished school three years ago, and that's the first time I've ever heard that word used outside of lessons.

After all the hipe and the official announcement of the TOC name, we all sort of knew it was going to be, in the last couple of weeks anyway, looks like the next MAIN event will be the unveiling of a couple of Class 390 Pendolinos in the new AVANTI West Coast livery.

So looking FORWARD to Monday 09th December at 1033 at London Euston and the big livery launch.

Does anyone else want to bet on one breakdown-triangle train running in reverse formation? We can but hope!

Two.

Great Western Railway
South Western Railway being shorter, modern version for London South Western Railway

So, one, then. A 'shorter, modern name' is not 'going back to proper railway brand names.' What's proper and modern about dropping the word London?

FirstGroup made much play on the heritage of the Great Western Railway name when they rebranded First Great Western. FirstGroup/MTR did no such play when they launched SWR. No mention was made of LSWR.

What are these retro names that are getting repetitive? Look at recent franchise awards and you don't see any retro pre-BR names.

Greater Anglia
East Midlands Railway
Transport for Wales
South Western Railway (okay... at a push)
Transpennine Express
Northern Rail

We've had just two. Great Western Railway and London North Eastern Railway. Although that second one dropped the 'and'.

Well a great deal of passenger traffic on the East Coast Mainline travel between London - Peterborough - Doncaster - York or Leeds. But it was still known as East Coast and N Express EC for some years even if someone going to Grantham wasn't going anywhere near the east coast :) .
Pretty much Preston - Lancaster - Carlisle - Glasgow skirts the West anyway and you'd head there as a basis for the whole north west coast.
Edit: Also Liverpool and Holyhead.

Ironic that yesterday morning an internet search for Avanti West Coast brought up this forum and nothing else. Be it a post on WNXX saying that the rail UK forum had suggested Avanti.
Try searching for it now!

I've just tried it in two major search engines, Google's first page brings up a lot of news stories about the rebranding, whilst Bing's first result is the Avanti West Coast site then a mixture of media & it's Wiki link. Of course what this shows is that search engines don't just find the top results based on your search string, but what the engine's algorithms determine is the best result for the individual user, based on the data the engine has already captured on the user (assuming the user hasn't used a strict set of advanced search rules).

What I was getting at though was that the only leaks before yesterday afternoon appeared to be here and the members only WNXX. As it was the only place referring to a possible Avanti West Coast before the actual press launch.

Ah righty, I get you now! Sorry slightly misread your post, I'm only one coffee number 1.... ;)

Just typed in Avanti.co.uk and it goes to an insurance website, no doubt I won’t be the only one to do this once people start searching for the brand when Virgin goes.

For many Virgin is he first port of call when booking long distance Rail travel. Will be a shame to see them go. The Avanti branding and livery look better than I expected, was expecting plain white or grey branding.

No, more than that. There is to be a complete interior refit with new seats (not just covers) in both classes.
Hmmmm talk of new seats makes me very nervous. I have not seen any evidence of better seats than the 390's being available for 125mph running.

Also, why? We are in a climate emergency - that is quite well recognised now. Why on earth throw all those perfectly good seats away. If they were dreadful and there is a far better solution available, fine. If a good quality new seat drastically reduced weight and therefore power consumption so much that it beats the embedded carbon in the old seats, new seats and the recyling energy costs of the current seats, then fine but that is clearly not the case. It would be an absolutely criminal waste of money and resources. To be honest I am not sure the seat covers even need replacing - they look to have a good 5 years left in them. They look better than the brand new flat cloth nonsense on GWR and Northern.

I hope somebody calls them out on this from the evironmental perspective.

LSWR would mean absolutely nothing to anyone but the most diehard enthusiast with an interest in the pre-grouping era.
