What are these retro names that are getting repetitive? Look at recent franchise awards and you don't see any retro pre-BR names.

Greater Anglia
East Midlands Railway
Transport for Wales
South Western Railway (okay... at a push)
Transpennine Express
Northern Rail

We've had just two. Great Western Railway and London North Eastern Railway. Although that second one dropped the 'and'.

But ones like South Western Railway and East Midlands Railway still seem retro inspired and EMR has that maroon livery which seems to pay homage to the LMS. Not to mention LNWR and WMR, which you forgot to mention.

Regarding the livery, I'm glad to see they've opted for a 'less is more' approach although I'm not convinced about the triangle logo even if it's supposed to represent the geographical bounds of the Avanti network. Somehow the logo looks a bit apologetic and could work better if it was a bit bolder. Meanwhile, regarding the Virgin talking loo, I like to think that this will be replaced by playing the 1979 Madness track 'One Step Beyond' which they recorded as an Italian version, 'Un Passo Avanti'

Maybe they should of opted for a two-time (black and white)livery for those specials they might do ;)

For me the livery should not of Been including green, as it looks too similar to the London North westerns colour scheme.

Surely Ferrari red would of been a better option? :D

I'm really not sure about all of this talk of confusion because of similarities in colour schemes. Some people will be confused at railway stations whatever happens but the vast majority of people are more than capable of reading departure boards and listening to announcements to figure out which train is the one they should get on. If there is still confusion then, again, the vast majority of people are capable of finding platform staff to ask questions.

As for what has been released over the last 24 hours, I like the logo, I like the colour scheme and I like the name. I will be more interested to see how the company performs though

I'm slightly surprised it wasn't red, white and green i.e. the Italian flag.

I thought, however, I'd seen it before, as someone said upthread:

Hmmmm talk of new seats makes me very nervous. I have not seen any evidence of better seats than the 390's being available for 125mph running.
The ones in LNER MK4 coaches and ScotRail HSTs?

Also, why? We are in a climate emergency - that is quite well recognised now. Why on earth throw all those perfectly good seats away
Put them in 153s, Pacers, or buses perhaps

I liked the original one on HSTs and the later one on 222s.

Looking back on the later one it's not as bad as I remember actually. I'm just a much bigger fan of the EMT livery that succeeded it.

I prefer this new Avanti livery to the MML one, it's got a bit more colour to it.

I think they've been building their upset since the new operator was announced
Or just maybe it's because a breakdown warning triangle livery isn't very good? One of the branding department suffering from a creative block drove (because I bet they don't ride trains) passed something like this on the way to the pitch meeting, clearly:

In the video they called First a 'world class operator', I think lots would disagree although they have taken the management from virgin which are rather good
Well, third class is only found elsewhere in the world now, so I guess that makes it a world class. Although, the famous painting of third class doesn't look crowded enough for one of First's trains:

Off topic, but have you ever noticed when people use these, they usually place it about 50 yards from where they have broken down, (i.e. less than three seconds away at 70 mph). Very much like the example in the photograph.

The UK Highway Code says "at least 45 metres" and of course most motorists will only walk the minimum to comply. This is, of course, crazy, as you note, but not as bad as France which says 30m! Belgium law requires 100m on fast roads - which is still only just enough distance to stop. It seems strange that the UN has not standardised these basic measures like they have white and red lights and so on. I think railway standards are better plus the signal controllers are better. At least warning triangles are not used on railway as far as I know so seeing a stopped Avanti in the distance should not confuse the railway - it might give drivers pause if it stops near a road crossing.

Off topic, but most people seem to put it within parking sensor distance of the back of their car. Then sit in it with hazards off. On their phones.

Not out of car, over barrier at a safe distance.

Because most drivers aren't trained for safety. And are, quite frankly, not thinking or are panicking..... it's amazing more people don't die this way.

On topic, it's a bit, erm, staid, isn't it. And the yellow panel looks a bit demode these says. It feels very 2005. Virgin, for its faults, gets branding and did it well. This is a very stolid start..... but if they're as reliable and kept clean (we don't mention the shop these days, do we ?) we will all get used to them....

So they've kept the logo simple. Lots of companies have very simple logos and it's generally those that are remembered more than the overly complicated designs - look at BR as a big example of that

And looking at the logo, will they go from Holyhead to Scotland direct ? It is also a bit like a skimpy bikini bottom triangle - but that says more about me, I expect...

BR's double arrow logo is only remembered because it is still in use in many places. I bet most non-railfans couldn't tell you what its 1948-1965 logo was, or that the 1965 double arrow was Azo Orange, not the red used on most signs now or the blue used by National Rail.

Consider First's track record with logos. Ignoring the f in a circle used on multiple train and bus companies which now has very negative reputation, their simplest logo so far was a gold star and I bet almost no passengers could now tell you which train company that was.

What's quite interesting about the F-in-circle is that it's very similar to FS (Trenitalia)'s logo! :)

I think it doesn't help that the most popular (?) swear word begins with an F. Even tweeting @FGW in the past felt like swearing :D

Didn't they inherit that from the original operator in the North West, which First bought out a couple of years after it started, with them then changing to the standard white/pink/blue livery and flying-F logos?

How do those who believe having two similar liveries on the same line might end up confusing passengers think passengers cope in countries with only one livery ?

Most passengers are in fact capable of spotting the different between a 350 and a Pendolino. Very few pay any attention to its colour!

I feel it is also a question of how severe the mistake hurts. Do any countries with only one livery charge you about €150 if you get on an InterCity taking 1h49 instead of a RegionalExpress taking 2h19 by mistake?
