Please list (separately) some of your favourite male & female ROCK singers. They can be either solo singers, or the singer in a rock band.
Please do not include anyone who is mainly regarded as a "pop" singer - I suggest anyone who is interested in pop should create their own thread. So - please - no Kylie, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Robbie Williams etc. in this thread.

My initial thoughts are here, but I am bound to forget some and will probably add more later.
Female:
Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane/Starship, The Great Society)
Dana Fuchs
Linda Ronstadt
Joanne Shaw Taylor
Beth Hart
Jerney Kaagman (Earth & Fire)
Janis Joplin
Joanna Dean

Male:
Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)
Jim Morrison (The Doors)
Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones)
Roger Daltrey (The Who)
Ian Gillan (Deep Purple)
Pete Rivera (a.k.a. Peter Hoorolbeke, of Rare Earth
Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad)

(More to follow....)

Grace Slick - seconded (Woodstock)
the late Mariska Veres (Shocking Blue)
Julie Driscoll (+ Brian A etc)
and Debbie H (I know she can't sing live, but who cares?)

Not entirely based on their vocal ability alone..,.

Well, I was SO lucky to hear both Grace Slick and Jim Morrison, with respective bands, at the Roundhouse in Camden Town. Note I say heard, not seen: the place was so crowded that I never got to see Morrison, only the other Doors, as I was stuck behind a pillar and quite incapable of moving. After the Doors had finished their set, the place emptied to an extent, so was able to witness the fantastic Slick and the airplane, and the best psychedelic light show I ever saw (and I saw a few).

Got to include Little Richard in the mix: still alive, and the essence of rock in his day. Carl Perkins too, without whom...

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
Female

Wendy James (Transvision Vamp) - admittedly she was one of the first famous people that I fancied 30 years ago.
Joan Jett
Donita Sparks (L7)
Chrissy Hynde (The Pretenders)
Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy)

Male

Jim Morrison (The Doors)
Rob Halford (Judas Priest)
Brian Johnson (AC/DC)
Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath)
Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow/Black Sabbath/Dio)

Both the female and male lists are not exhaustive as I have plenty more, therefore I have kept it to five each.

Some female singers in no particular order, but some with career highlights

Tina Turner (for River Deep Mountain High and Proud Mary)
The late Ofra Haza for extraordinary backing vocals on Temple of Love by the Sisters of Mercy
Merry Clayton for Gimme Shelter with the Stones. Famously Clayton was named "Merry" because she was born on Xmas day. Not Noelle or Robin...Merry.
The late Dolores O' Riordan of the Cranberries for taxing my spelling ability and for "Zombie"

Sandy Denny and the Big ''O'', absolutely. So sad that both should die far too young, particularly Sandy. Maddy Prior pretty good too.

Absolutely, both gone too soon.

I did wonder about including Maddy, given she's more on the folk side, but she has one of my favourite voices in music, so I had to include her.

Arthur Lee, of Love. So regret I couldn't get to London for his last appearance there before his death, so never saw him. 'Alone Again Or' one of the most beautiful, poignant songs ever, from one of the greatest and underrated album of all times, Da Capo.

Forever Changes ;)
Yes, you're right. They say that if you remember the sixties you weren't there, so my amnesia only proves it. Actually, Da Capo was merely a vg album, Forever Changes a truly great one. I do remember all the details of the album cover, though, in its wonderful rough cardboard that all Elektra albums of the time came in, all imported directly from the U.S,

I completely agree, I even specifically mentioned the album in the recent music genres thread. https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/poll-your-favourite-genres-of-music.195408/#post-4297662

Another vote for Freddie Mercury (one of my great regrets is not seing him perform live)
Meatloaf

Both have a great voice and a wide variety of musical styles.

And also another vote for Hazel O'Conner, particularly for 'Will you'.

For one-offs, Clare Torry in Pink Floyd's The Great Gig In The Sky.
Absolutely top notch vocal performance. Power, dynamics, passion, emotion.
And not a lyric in 'sight'.
