Map of zone area; https://assets.ctfassets.net/nv7y93...1d0e2f57548c3154c80cd228/Wayfarer-bus-map.pdf is the latest map, but in the key it doesn't explain clearly if, for example, Earlestown is valid. Surely they should say, or better still, put it inside the zone?? I am 100% sure it is as the zone boundary is for "buses" (which pax might not notice) and the stations are marked, but just to be sure...

I actually would use it to Parbold if I'm sure it's valid. Thanks!

Can’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be valid on trains to Earlestown and Parbold.

Mind you last year I emailed TfGM and they confirmed that I could use a Wayfarer on direct Virgin trains between Warrington BQ and Wigan NW - didn’t risk it though!

I have wondered that, the two stations are emboldened yet the actual direct line route isn't shown, therefore leaving the situation ambiguous. I would have thought - for that reason alone - the ticket's invalid. Maybe the line should be shown if valid or as a different colour with an explanation if not-valid?

I cannot see why the lines to Parbold (and Goostrey/Holmes Chapel) would be shown at all if not to indicate that the ticket is valid. Likewise the stations at Earlestown/NLW/Plumley.
BTW a literal reading of the map would exclude a certain infrequent service :)

The ticket may be used to Earlestown by train only.

The visual map has changed but the validity is the same.

Goostrey and Holmes Chapel are certainly valid - no idea why, though. I'm not complaining as it's been very much to my advantage over the years as it's bang on the edge of the zone.

I'm pretty sure you shouldn't risk that. Warrington Bank Quay to Wigan North Western has never been valid on a Manchester Wayfarer - I don't think the Golborne Junction to Lowton Junction line is valid either (third side of the triangle at Newton-le-Willows) but no problem travelling on trains to Earlestown from Warrington Bank Quay or Manchester / Newton-le-Willows.

The major problem is finding a train to do the 3rd side of the triangle! I imagine it's not shown (as with the route I mentioned) to avoid misleading the average traveller.

There's some geographical liberties been taken in squeezing all the information onto that map - it's more misleading than the tube diagram, given Manchester Airport is to the North East of Holmes Chapel and almost on top of Styal.

There are some direct trains from Warrington Bank Quay to Eccles (and vice-versa) without having to change at Newton-Le-Willows (eg 1541 tomorrow) and I assume it takes you into Manchester, but that journey IS on the Wayfarer map - but as alluded to to get from Wigan to Warrington using the wayfarer ticket means no direct (ie Virgin) travel, so it can only be done Wigan - Oxford Road, (and not via Eccles/Patricroft) hence the missing link!

We need a name for it - The Glazebury Triangle where connecting trains simply disappear! To be honest though the option to change at the nearest station, Patricroft, is so far from the main line there's almost zero chance of anyone wanting to do that, maybe only "enthusiasts" with day rover tickets doing odd routes for the sake of it. Like, er, me, then. It's a pity the map is geographically inaccurate r/e scale as it looks quite an obvious route at first glance!!

EDIT: Puffing Devil beat me to that last bit by seconds!!

by the looks on the new map and the old one I have the east side of the triangle ( Manchester) side can be used to get to Wigan but not the west side even though certain services from Wigan to Liverpool via Newton le willows use this side but its mostly evening journeys
