ScotRail are running a competition, the prize for which is an annual season ticket on their smartcard. There does not appear to be a restriction on which two stations you can choose - so which would give you the biggest prize?

Elgin to Dumfries?

Elgin would give you via both Aberdeen and Inverness. Not sure if Thurso does (I haven't checked). In any case no season ticket fares are set up for either flow and you probably couldn't get there and back in a day on the one from Thurso.

The dearest season ticket Scotrail price is Kyle of Lochalsh-North Berwick "via Aviemore" at £17104 a year. I notice that a Kyle-Edinburgh ticket would permit travel via Mallaig according to easement 700784, so that season (for a mere £15072 a year) may actually cover more track. Neither is valid via Aberdeen, though.
