I don’t see why there really needs to be a farewell tour. A decently publicised last run that doesn’t get cancelled at the last minute is good enough for me, with the trains gracefully bowing out doing the job for which they were originally built.

The last normal run of the GN 313s was a low-key affair, and IMO this worked rather better than a crowded tour.
Isn't that forgetting the rather successful tour which was the last passenger run of 313 064/134?

If there was to be a farewell run it would most likely be sometime after the last planned service on December 14th. As far as I’m aware no decision has been made yet

I think overall capacity on the North Clyde and possibly Argyle lines is set to be reduced as a result of 318s/320s being cascaded to replace the remaining 314s next month.

I previously doubted this when it was posted but it appears it may be correct. No significant diagramming or platforming alterations at Glasgow Central according to RTT (If this is indeed reliable) which would suggest the five remaining 314 diagrams will be replaced by class 318/320s. The current 6 car 318/20 diagram on the Lanark route could be replaced by 385s, however other than that the rest will need to come from the North Clyde routes.

Isn't there normally 6 cars on some of the Springburn-Dumbarton Central day time services? I think some of these may be reduced to 3 car to provide for south of the river. There is also the possibility that the current 6 car 314 diagram that is only out during the peaks could be changed to a 4 car 380, which would keep another 2 units north of the river. I don't see where 385s will be fitting in on the Cathcarts based on what I can see.

Most of the 4 cars are required to run Ayrshire services, as well as a diagram over on North Berwick I believe. Ayrshire services are quite busy, so we really can't lose a 4 car.

Makes sense tbh. 385s are not a suitable unit for ex-314 routes which has been discussed at length previous. Even the 380s are a bit of a fetch. The 318s and 320s are ideal trains for these routes and when they go a suitable replacement needs to be considered.

The Ayrshire and Inverclyde routes need their 4 cars however it’s really busy on that line and they shouldn’t really have to give up capacity. Is there any more spare 321s laying around that could be converted to assist?

Neilston is four car throughout the day bolstered by some six car workings in the peak; 314,318 & 320 at the moment as 380s are too long for the turnback siding at Neilston.

This I agree with, as some on some routes, particularly at weekends, services running as a 3 car normally have all seats gone. So we really need the 4 cars to boost capacity. This can be seen with Largs services as they are relatively full throughout the day.

Not sure how it is now but I know when the 380s were first introduced, the Largs route has mainly always 3 car operated but prior to that it would normally be a 6 car 318 or 334. Overcrowding on that route was becoming a bit of a problem given it’s only an hourly service!

Yes I'm not too bothered about tours. Easy enough to chuck a unit out on a specific diagram and let people know in advance. For example, the farewell day for the 302s had four of them in traffic all day on a Saturday covering every route. The times were published in RAIL in advance. If I recall correctly, LTS said anyone with a return ticket to Shoeburyness could travel up and down the network as much as they liked all day. The plan worked well, there were loads of enthusiasts. As it turned out, the 302s did one or two peak runs the following week but the Saturday event was still good.

It's really becoming a problem in peak times now, with the 16:30 in particular. Normally standing room only out of Glasgow and is only 3 carriages.

Same with the 0642 departure from Largs, normally standing room only by Dalry.

I think using 380s to replace the 314s on some routes was a bit of a silly move.

I remember the 302 day - exactly how it should be done.

In the old timetable the 1618 Largs was a 3 car and was eventually increased to 6 car.
Saturday all Ayrshire services from 1000 to around 1730 were 6 cars before 380

Good call about bringing additional 321 converted to 3 cars. These could run as 6 cars on Neilston services. Or bring in the 321/9 and 322 and use on Neilston off peak then transfer in peak to Inverclyde or Newton services

209 on its own this morning for the 7.55 from Neilston to Glasgow, that’s not going to be popular considering the 7.41 (usually a 318/320 pair) was cancelled. I’m intrigued to see how they cover these diagrams come Monday the 16th

there’s also a 320 out vice a 314 on the 0734 outer circle and subsequent workings. That should attach for the 0811 inner circle so there’s probably another 320 out instead of a 314.

I see what you’re saying about the 4 cars but the Neilston route also needs these. It’s not as if they carry fresh air about. The diagrams covering the Neilston line were never taken from Ayrshire anyway, these are the units no longer required for north Berwick. I’d be surprised if there were any changes involving those diagrams at this timetable change.

Scotrail aren't well known for their farewell trips. I don't think they did anything for the 101s or 117s. The last run for the 303s was a one way trip from Bellgrove to Helensburgh quite early on New Year's Eve.
It was 30th December 2002, one day before New Year's Eve.

The dropping of a hint on another forum prompted me to check Realtime Trains for Wednesday 18/12/19 and revealed the following:

5W97 0923 Shields T.M.D. to Glasgow Central
2W98 1010 Glasgow Central to Cumbernauld via Ayr, Motherwell and Carstairs
2W99 1510 Cumbernauld to Glasgow Central via Motherwell, Dalmuir and Helensburgh Central
5W99 1914 Glasgow Central to Shields T.M.D.

This looks suspiciously like the planned route for a Class 314 farewell tour, does it not? What a tour it would be too, with places the 314s haven't been in years and, in the case of Cumbernauld, never before in public service.

Brilliant. Will I be able to use an SPT Daytripper ticket. :)

I'm in Glasgow on the most random of trips, nephew loves Pendolino so much we are all jumping on a train to Glasgow and back to Preston in the same day for a last hurrah on Virgin Trains. According to him, they HAVE to be Virgin Pendolino's (he's only 7).

Thought though I might have a sniff of spotting a 314 or two for a final time. Will any be working into Central tomorrow. Ideally around 3pm or 6.30pm!

Currently on the 12:15 Cathcart Circle which is 314205. It's weird seeing a train with SPT colors in 2019.

It’s a shame it’s on that day, I’ve already booked myself on the LNER Farewell tour. You’d think they wouldn’t clash Farewell tours
